I have seen that GW are changing the 'recipe' of their washes, and have seen comparison pictures of new/old recipes of them. I'm a big fan of Nuln Oil, and would like to stock up on some bottles of the old recipe.

link

The bottle that I have has a © date 2020 on the label, and 24ml in the bottle.

A couple of questions: when did the recipe change?

I went to my FLGS and they had ©2021 and 18ml in the bottle. Staff couldn't help me out if it was new or old Nuln Oil.

So, if any Nuln Oil users, who know that they have old recipe Nuln would be so kind and look at the label on their bottle… Is ©2021 old or new?

(And thank you anyone offering alternatives, but I'm only interested in Nuln Oil)

Thanks in anticipation

Conclusion reached by the painter on the video was that "New" GW shades have the same recess shading as the "Old" shades but with less tinting on the surface.

He was using the new GW dropper bottles so I'm not sure what size compares to what.

My bottle of Nuln Oil has 2014 on the bottom so it is most definitely old.

Your mileage may vary but I've found that Army Painter Dark Tone Ink is a reasonable substitute for Nuln Oil.

It's the surface tinting that I like. There aren't any GW paints (of any sort) available in dropper bottles. Lots of people decant the pots into dropper bottles, and it often surfaces as an April Fool's Day 'story' that dropper bottles are being introduced.

Thank you for the AP tip, but it's 'old' Nuln Oil that I'm after

As I understand it the old formulation was sold in 12 and 24ml bottles, The new is being sold in 18 which is the same size as the Contrast paints. There are several Youtubers with comments and clips about this.

KeepYourPowderDry,

The painter on the video that you linked to was using dropper bottles with a Citadel logo. If they weren't real, well. . .

There was a suggestion that a better shade/wash could be made from a diluted GW Black Templar Contrast Paint.

The painter on the video that you linked to was using dropper bottles with a Citadel logo.

He transfers his Citadel paint to dropper bottles and reuses the label off of the Citadel paint pot.

From what I've heard, the new shade colors formulation is closer to the what Contrast paint uses. It is a bit thicker and different flow properties.

I have the answer to my original question:

Old formula are 24ml and have a large green circular paint splash on the label.

New formula are 18ml and the green splash is much smaller, encircling the letter 'c' of colour.

The ©2021 was a red herring – even though the new formula was only released a week or so ago, their labels bear ©2021 and not ©2022.

I stoked up on on nuln oil recently. Guessing it's new?

My issue is the shineyness in the recesses. Hopeing Matt varnish will help.

Am I doing something wrong? I shake and dilute it a bit.

@The H Man – I also didn't like the shininess in the recessess. I found the P3 armor wash (e.g. here link ) is less shiny in the recesses but doesn't matt down the armour.

Thanks. Do you know the size/ml of it? I can't find the details on the site, or eBay.

Any other options people have, please let me know. I may buy a few just to try to find a good one. If you can list a size and maybe a price or link, that would help too.

I may do a bunch of test figures to try some out.

The best part is that the new 18ml bottles are the same price as the old 24ml bottles.

Nuln Oil is basically a black wash right? I just make my own. I make it 8oz at a time, like brown wash.

Recipe?

I have been using acrylic floor polish and black water soluble ink, the pigment in the ink is much finer than any paint and I can adjust the density to suit my purpose. The best part is that a quart of floor polish runs about $5 USD and the black ink is about $7 USD so I can make 32oz of "Nuln Oil" for less than the cost of 36ML of the GW product. And the floor polish provides a nearly indestructible surface as well.
