The best way to glimpse into genuine U.S. military history is by visiting some of the nation's best military museums. They range from high-tech educational institutions to historical sites, and all have plenty to feast your eyes and brains on. Even better, they'll give you a glimpse into the military's past – always good knowledge to have….

I thought this was a poll so I listed some military oriented museums. I have visited all seven of those museums and many more. Some people take Museums for granted. They are wonderful places to visit.

For non-US citizens I'd throw in the Kreig's Museum in Vienna. It's very good, as is the Bavarian Military Museum in Ingolstadt. And in Australia, the National War Memorial in Canberra houses an excellent Museum covering Australia's war experiences. The Australian Armor Museum in Townsville is developing into a great museum and they have a famous YouTube Channel reporting on their restoration journeys on their vehicles.

That list sounds great.

For the UK – Imperial War Museum, National Army Museum, IWM Duxford, RAF Hendon, RAF Cosford, IWM HMS Belfast,Tower of London, Wallace Collection.

If you like planes – and frankly who doesn't? – Yorkshire Air Museum, De Havilland Museum, Shuttleworth collection (WWI planes in the air on airshow days…), and many more.

+1 Old Contemptible – museums (and not just military ones) are great places

I'd add the Military Museum in Brussels, Belgium, the Musee de l'Armee in Paris, the Museum of the Empire in Salons de Provence, France and the Military Museum in Kalemegdan Belgrade, Serbia. The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum in Copenhagen is also good, as is the Istanbul Military Museum.

The West Point Museum in Highland Falls, New York, USA. The Armee Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.

Oh it's not a poll? Maybe it could be.

I would add the Military Museum in Lisbon . This is one of the few major Military museums in Europe ( including UK) which has not deteriorated in quality in recent years with the arrival of Political Correctness and the reduction of interesting exhibits in order to cater for a less historically educated public .When you see large rooms on recent Afghanistan and nothing on the Indian Mutiny you wonder if you are in a museum.

The Nimitz museum of the war in the pacific at Fredericksburg, Texas. Awesome.

The Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna stands at the top of my list, even my wife and daughter, neither of whom are 'into' military history, liked it.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA.

Duxford, the HGM, the AHM in Dreden, Le Musée de la Cavalerie and Musée des Blindés in Saumur are also up there. There's also the AWM in Canberra, the Friedrich der Gross Museum (and Zinnfiguren museum) in the Plassenburg in Kulmbach and Flugwerft Schleissheim in Munich that are well worth visiting.

Imperial War Museum, WWII museum in New Orleans is great also

Sadly I wouldn't include the Imperial War Museum (the main site). Very underwhelming since it's last major refurb. The others are better.

I'll second the Marine Corps museum, one of the best I've ever gone to. It's a shame the Naval Aviation museum is no longer open to the general public.

Has anyone mentioned The Tank Museum at Bovington?

Cerdic16 Jul 2022 9:46 a.m. PST

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Loads to see, worth going for the Mary Rose exhibits alone. And it's interesting for non-military/history buffs as well…

I should like to add the Military Museum in Belgrade. My mother, who fought the Nazis as a Serbian partisan, worked there after the war, where my English father met her, and subsequently got married, returned to England and had me.
I rather enjoyed visiting it once in childhood, but that was over 50 years ago.

The Panssari museum in Finland had an incredible amount of early war tanks. But it has been 40 years since I visited.

The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois (western suburb in the Chicago area has an open air tank park and has excellent walk through exhibits. The museum traces the history of the First division of the US Army. It also has a great research section in its lower level, but I don't know if this is open to the public. While we lived in the Chicago area, I took several of my grandsons to the tank park to climb around on them (along with their grandpa). Don't know if one can do that anymore.

one i went to many years ago was the Artillery museum in St Petersburg several notable exhibits were 28mm dioramas of 17th century siege works, model villages 1/35th/ish scale to demonstrate how to defend a village WW2 style, real WW2 artillery pieces dozens of varieties both towed and self propelled.
one was real 12pounder british guns claimed to have been captured in the crimean war. could these be the guns the light brigade missed by going down the wrong valley.

i doubt many westerners will be going there any time soon.
