I noticed KeyForge is moving from Fantasy Flight to Ghost Games. I think they also transferred Star Wars to Atomic Mass games. Warcradle has the Spartan IP and Wild West Exodus from Battlefoam.

It's making me think the larger companies release the product and expansions until demand dries up then sell it off and move on. When deciding what to buy, I think it's important to think about how long you have until you're abandoned.

"Posties wouldn't tell us what game we were playing, I should have guessed it was the American Civil War. I've nothing against playing the ACW apart from the rules we use, "Fire n Fury". At one point I will admit to loving the rules, but that was many moons ago, now they fill me with a sense of dread and anger. I've said it before, you could have the tactical genius of a mushroom and as long as you keep throwing high you'll win. I've had my fair share of wins and my fair share of losses with these rules, most of the losses were ones where I could quite easily hang up the dice and take up crochet!…"

That's the danger with major IPs. How many different editions of the Star Wars RPG has there been? Of the TT games? How many editons of Star Trek RPGs have there been? TT Games? At least with the latter there is the various iterations of SFB, which has a deal grandfathered in. It's a catch-22: a big name IP is popular, draws a lot of gamers. But the royalties are also large, so when the market reaches saturation, the manufacturers cannot generate enough revenue to pay the royalties, so the game gets dropped. If it wasn't for royalties, they could keep putting out product at a maintenance level, to keep new players supplied with prodcuct.

Damon.

Yeah, it's a reason I try to avoid franchise gaming--or buy all the figures as quickly as possible. The rights are bound to change hands, which means new rules incompatible with existing scenarios and miniatures in yet another scale. I say buy the figures if they look good, and play with generic rules.
