" This is a somewhat fraught subject, and there are people out there who take their own opinions very, very seriously. I suspect that they're very angry people at heart, and need to chill a bit, but anyway. The main thing to remember is that the numbers used to describe miniature figure size and model scale are quite different, and bear only a passing relationship to each other. A purportedly 15mm figure might be anywhere from 12mm to 18mm or worse, but a 1/72 scale model will (or should) always be in a proportion of one real-world centimetre to 72 scale centimetres…"

Human are various sizes (even within the prime select ones in the military). That said, a standard issue M-60 machine gun is not. Compare an M-60 in the Vietnam range between a West Wind and a TAG figure and you will see they are not compatible. Interestingly enough, the SKS mixes well between West Wing, TAG, Baker Company, and even London War Room. A little variation in body size makes for a more interesting mix of figures (I have all of the above in my Vietnam collection), but I draw the line at weapons that are clearly larger or smaller that the base. |

Nicely done! I to have had to jump in on Size vs. Scale discussions. I could go into the history of why cast figures are by size, but perhaps another time. I love the illustration style of your proportion chart! Now I can point people to your site, in addition to the old TMP ref: TMP link |

If figure sculpters stuck to scale, instead of arbitrarily classing figuers by an ill definde model height the world would be a more simple place. There are some limitations at smaller scale where manufacturing tollerances limit the minimum size of features but I am appaled when I see for example 28mm figures with almost larger rifle barrels than a 1/144 scale model which is oversize because of manufacturing issues. Col dunford has a point, a rifle is the same size regardless of the build of the man holding it. In these days of CADDS design this can only put down to incompetence or caricature, neither to me, are admarable trates in a sculpter Perhaps many figures should be written off as caricaturse rarther than an attemt to represnt a scale model. If the suppossed minature can't fit in the vehicle supposed to be the correct size, an issue which is aprent even in some larger scales, then presuming they are anything other than caricature is a fallacy. |
