Mine:

Finland: a beautiful tune and an uplifting message (if it's the same words they play at my church)

Britain

Philippines

USA (I'm actually not a huge fan of the song, but I'm American so it's on the list!)

I love the Italian national anthem

FWIW I live about 10 miles from where the tune of the US national anthem was written, and I've visited the site that inspired the words several times. Well done the Royal Navy for that :)

Nothing beats "We Can Rule You Wholesale", the Ankh-Morpork anthem.

Hands down La Marseillaise

Followed by Russia (not a huge fan of the country, but great song), UK, USA, Canada and then Germany

+1 for La Marseillaise; the "Casablanca" scene in Rick's "Cafe Amercan" where the barflies' rendition humiliates the Nazis always brings me to my feet with tears in my eyes.

Germans were robbed. Deutschland Uber Alles is a notch below the Marsailles, but Wacht am Rhein would have won.

Mollinary04 Jul 2022 11:12 a.m. PST

The old East German anthem, good tune, inspiring words, always livened up the Olympic "women's" shot put competition!

Point Mollinary. Lots of national anthems which no longer have a country. The Imperial Russian National Anthem? Or Austro-Hungary's Gott Erhalte Unser Kaiser?

For that matter, "Land of Hope and Glory" ranks well above "God Save the Queen" much as I admire Elizabeth II.

Mollinary04 Jul 2022 11:40 a.m. PST

Agree 100% Robert. The Austrian version, to the same Haydn tune as the German anthem, is hugely impressive. I remember being deeply moved when it was played at the funeral of Otto Von Habsburg. Ironically, of course, the Imperial German anthem, Heil dir Iim Siegerkranz, was to a somewhat oompah band version of God Save the Queen! But the Russian Imperial anthem is also a magisterial piece of music, cleverly worked into the 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky.

Another vote for the "Casablanca" version of "la Marseillaise".

The Star Spangled Banner
Never cared for the Canadian anthem, just personal choice.

Zyphyr thanks despite being a Discworld fan I.d never seen that. I love the motto.

I always loved the Imperial Russian anthem, used as the title music for the BBC War and Peace adaptation [1970's]

Welsh of course, Mae Hen Wlad fy nhadau.

The mareillaise is stirring, and I find the Italian anthem rather jolly, usually hear it when Ferrari win Formula 1 races.

Grand Dragon04 Jul 2022 6:58 p.m. PST

La Marseillaise – Alors, enfant de la patrie/ le jour de gloire est arrivé. Who can beat that?

Italia and La Marseillaise are stirring tunes.
The Imperial Russian and the modern British anthems are very inspiring.
The Imperial Austrian anthem (the Haydn one) will always move my heart but often with some bitterness, because it had been ripped awway from us after WW1.

Marseillaise…and We Can Rule You Wholesale :))

I actually rather favor the Imperial March:

I'm surprised so many like the UK one…it's a bit of a dirge, at least one verse is always avoided (anti- Scottish) and really it's a song about the monarch not the country…
We do have songs about the country that would make a good anthem though: Jerusalem and land of Hope & Glory.
