I have plans for 10mm wargames and was wondering about suitable base sizes for 10mm that are based individually. I am going to use Pendraken figures.

I figure that 10mm x 10mm square is the most suitable choice for infantry, that way they can form a tight line. But I am uncertain about the size of bases for cavalry and artillery.
Would 10mm x 20mm be large enough for cavalry? Or should it be 15mm x 30mm?
My guess for artillery is either 40mm x 40mm or 50mm x 50mm.

Anyone with some thoughts about this?

10 x 10 for infantry should be fine. 10 x20 for cav. Artillery depends on the model. Elephants go 20x40

For my Sudan figures, I've gone for 15x15 for infantry and 15x25 for cavalry. For artillery I've used the smallest base the gun would fit on. This doesn't give a tight line but does enable you to move individuals around more easily, without knocking neighbouring figures about.

Thank you for your responses Gozerius and Slugbalancer.

It's a good point to have a bit of a larger base for easier handling, but I prefer the tighter lines for the particular setting I am going for (Weird Napoleonic, Turnip28 (guess Turnip10 in this case)). But I will keep it in mind for late 19th-century period games.

I use multifigure bases but my 30mm square bases (only 20mm depth is used for figures, the rest is a label & die holder) can take two ranks of 4 foot or 3 horsemen. For march poses you could probably get 5 in a 30mm frontage.

I used 10mm*1 washers for 10mm skirmish minitaures.
