Hello everyone,

What is the most accurate book on battle orders with the numbers of men for each unit for Gettysburg?

Thank you.

Hi there.

My go to source is "Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg" by John Busey and David Martin, 1994.

Its a very detailed account of the numbers involved and weapons used.

Hope this helps

Also, there are a set of Osprey books cover each day and both sides.

Then there's The Gettysburg Companion by Mark Adkins. It's a beautiful all-inclusive book, with numerous illustrations and a good OOB. Pretty hard to find nowadays, but worth it.

James Arnold's Osprey OOB books are.probably the best.

I second "Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg" by John Busey and David Martin, 1994.

Even gives what each regiment was armed with. Gettysburg is probably the most documented ACW battle. This book should give you what you are asking about and then some.

Have a copy of the 2005 4th Edition of RS S&L at Gettysbug, as well as the 1994 edition. The 2005 version increases the page count to over 600, corrects a few errors and omissions in the earlier versions, and adds details for the engagement on the 3rd July at Fairfield. Thoroughly recommended.

Agree with Pzivh43

If you want to do Gettysburg, the best single source book would be "The Gettysburg Companion" (the complete guide to America's most famous battle) by Mark Adkin.

It has Busey and Martin's as its source for order of battle and a ton of info, illustrations, maps, charts, photos and equipment.

And yes it's hard to find and not cheap

But if you are really serious it is worth it.

Also would recommend Bradley M. Gottfried's "Maps of Gettysburg" and his companion book "Brigades of Gettysburg" as other great sources.
