Yes, the Russians, PRC/CCP, India and others don't like the current world order. They would like and are trying to change it. The West does not have the capable leadership to stem this tide. FDR and Churchill are needed … Not the poor excuse for leadership the West has today.

JSchutt23 May 2023 10:28 a.m. PST

If public approval ratings for G7 leaders leading their citizens into poverty through self imposed sanctions and war matter one can only guess…
34% Trudeau
33% Sunak
34% Scholtz
31% Kishida
25% Macron
49% Meloni
42% Biden

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa23 May 2023 11:32 a.m. PST

Those ratings look quite high for some of them….

I'm going to tell you a little secret about real democracies, sometimes the person in charge isn't very popular!

Try doing a time series chart…

At least I can call a war a war.

UshCha23 May 2023 12:48 p.m. PST

JSchutt – So what is Putins approval rating based on real facts not Putins FSB ruled raiting?

Do you really think Putin is really higher rated than Macron? Your numbers are meaningless without a real Putin rating.
If he were to be ruler of Ukraine would he suddenly be loved more than Meloni or far less than Macron.

JSchutt23 May 2023 1:21 p.m. PST

The topic is "How Long Can The Western Consensus On The Ukraine War Hold?" not "How popular is Putin compared to the G7. Choose any number you like for Putin…. as for the G7 their citizens don't seem to be very happy… but then again expectations of politicians in general is pretty low.

Andy ONeill23 May 2023 1:29 p.m. PST

There's
lies
damn lies

Then there's extrapolation from approval ratings done by someone who has an agenda to push.

Macron, for example, has been intending to push through changes from years such as pension reforms.
Yellow vest protesters started in 2018.
Which was of course rather before Russia's most recent invasion of Ukraine.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa23 May 2023 2:11 p.m. PST

The West's support for the war will last as long as it lasts. But I'd say this, public support will have to dip well below current levels for a sustained period before it becomes a significant political issue. There is a difference between Westoid's getting bored and cutting support being an issue they will actively bend the ear of their representatives about. There is a certainly no mainstream UK political party talking up discontinuation of support for Ukraine with a general election coming up.

Anyone would think there is something wrong with an international rules based order?

The West's support for the war will last as long as it lasts.
To let Putin "win" will only embolden him and those like him. Plus if Putin is not pushed out of the Ukraine, it will be like awarding bad behavior …

They all should be concerned … As one of the bigger militaries in the world will be defeated. Pushing them into a second class state. Whose only "saving grace" is their nukes.

IMO – No … Poland will not invade Putin's puppet Belarus.

Even if Putin is deploying some of his Nukes in Belarus …

Bottom line IMO … the US, NATO, etc. need to continue to support the Ukraine. To stop would only look like Putin has won. Plus embolden PRC/CCP to possibly attack Taiwan. Both saw/see weakness in many in the West, with its #1 Superpower(?) in the lead. And many have taken advantage of the situation.

To improve success in the Ukraine, NATO and the US should be on a war footing. NATO has to make Putin and the Russians realize NATO is a credible force again. IMO the US should pick up the pace of material support. If Russia "wins", Xi may see this a good time to invade Taiwan. They know the weakness in the West starting at the top.

Hmmm … FWIW – when has the Swiss involvement been decisive in conflicts of the 20th & 21st Centuries? But they do make good chocolate.

wardog18 Jun 2023 2:12 p.m. PST

problem is they are producing various ammo types, example ammo for gepard aa ,which they wont send to ukraine at present

Good point … they do make other things than chocolate. This would be just another bump in the road with this conflict.

Yes, read an article on Military.com on the "new" M10 to give lighter units more firepower to kill Tanks, etc.

My concern is it may be too light ? To be easy to transport, etc., in C-17s, etc.

However just like with the M2, Stryker and LAV, they had to be up armored to make them more survivable on the modern battlefield. Will this happen with the M10 ?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse20 Jun 2023 5:00 p.m. PST
