Very interesting.

Is it just me getting the impression that the navies of the world were relatively more integrated and 'equal' than land forces? The role of black sailors in Nelson's navy is now quite well known – the Royal Navy even had it's first black Captain, Jack Perkins, in 1800! link

I think it was just harder to find landsmen and waisters then it was to draft soldiers. I never really read of any press gang altrusim.
