A fascinating piece, now that the 70th anniversary is almost upon us, suggesting that there is an unexplored story behind "Hornet's" dive bombers missing the First Air Fleet altogether. I tend to roll my eyes at revisionist history, but this is an interesting theory, with at least superficial plausibility.

Lundstrom discusses this in a fair amount of detail in his books covering the battle (e.g. portions of The First Team, and of Black Shoe Carrier Admiral).

Seemingly the only new idea here is the authors speculation that the error was not Ring's but Mitscher's.

I always thought it was strange that the Navy promoted the least efficient captain at Midway (Mitscher), and criticised the most efficient one (Buckmaster). I guess these promotion things have a certain amount of momentum…
