'Supplement: Failure of Air Power, 28 May 2022' by Tom Cooper is the article about "VKS & UAF both applying toss (or loft) bombing techniques to little effect, resulting in lots of wasted ordnance", referred to by JominiW.

👍👍 Good intel !!!! One unit symbol that I'm unsure of. MCB – looks like an Inf unit with 4 circles below it.

I know two circles under the Inf symbol = a motorized unit.

I believe the US M2s and Styrkers have made it to the Ukraine ? They were already issued US M113s, the Oz "stretch" version of the M113 and the IIRC the upgraded Dutch version of the M113s. I'm old … I forget a lot of the designations. old fart
😕😔😖😬😬

The last time I was in an M113A1 was back in '89 … 🗿

On this map is the 35th MCB – Marine Combat Brigade – waves rather than 4 circles.
But there is also the 15th OB NHU – 15th Operational Brigade – National Guard – with 3 circles on an infantry symbol and the 79th AAB – Airborne Assault Brigade – with 3 circles on an airmobile mech infantry symbol.

3 circles = wheeled and cross-country capable.

Mechanized infantry (wheeled-"medium"); equipment examples: 3rd Brigade (US 2nd Infantry Division), Stryker, ZSL-08, Patria AMV, Mowag Piranha, BTR-80 (with machine gun turrets) wiki

I see ! Those were waves ! Yep = amphibious capabilities/Marines/Naval Infantry. Looked like 4 wheels … DOH !… old fart

Yep got those ! But the Airmobile Bde does not have any lift or gunship assets ? I was with the 101, '80-'83.

3 circles = wheeled and cross-country capable.
We'd have called that Motorized too … back then … IIRC …

Mechanized infantry (wheeled-"medium"); equipment examples: 3rd Brigade (US 2nd Infantry Division),
I was with 3d Bde 2ID, '84-'85 with an M113A1 Mech Bn. 3d Bde also had a Leg Infantry unit too. We were actually one Bn short.

Then later long after I ETS'd, 3d Bde became a Stryker unit.

Mechanized infantry (wheeled-"medium"); equipment Stryker, ZSL-08, Patria AMV, Mowag Piranha, BTR-80 (with machine gun turrets)
That makes sense. That is what I would have thought. Thanks …

As I see in the link … NATO symbols may have changed since I got out in early '90 … a long, long time ago … 🌌

Probably none, especially for the newly formed brigades. Even the pre-2022 brigades with airmobile training probably would have had to borrow assets from the air-force.

Thanks for that intel. So, their Army does not have its own Assault/lift ships and Gunships ? Like in the US Army, e.g. the 101 Airborne Air Assault Div.

Druzhina17 Apr 2023 5:47 p.m. PST

I had a look at The-Military-Balance-2021

The Ukrainian Army has control of 4 aviation brigades of helicopters:

HELICOPTERS
ATK ε35 Mi-24 Hind
MRH 1 Lev-1
TPT • Medium ε23 Mi-8 Hip

Their navy has:
HELICOPTERS
ASW 7+: 4+ Ka-27 Helix A; 1 Mi-14PS Haze A; 2 Mi-
14PL Haze C
TPT • Medium 1 Ka-29 Helix-B
TRG 1 Ka-226

Their airforce has:
HELICOPTERS
C2 ε14 Mi-9
TPT 32: Medium ε30 Mi-8 Hip; Light 2 PZL Mi-2 Hoplite

So the army has a lot of the helicopters but none are dedicated to the Airborne Assault Troops, which is a separate force to the 3 above.

Airborne Assault Troops
No helicopters

Their National Guard has:
HELICOPTERS
TPT 12: Medium 9: 2 H225M; 7 Mi-8 Hip; Light 3: 2 H125; 1 Mi-2MSB

Their Maritime Border Guard has:
HELICOPTERS
ASW: Ka-27 Helix A

Thanks good intel as always ! As I see they don't use their air assault assets like the US does. For better or worse. Seems they still are doing a good job, regardless …

I'll admit I'm a bit "tainted" being Parachute and Air Assault qualified. In my far distant youth … old fart
