Hey You | 18 May 2022 10:08 a.m. PST |
I was reading some old Starguard rules (6th and 7th editions) last night before bed and noticed that Trolls had armor class H (130). I do not remember reading about trolls before, because they never interested me. Anyway, does anyone know the real time edition/date that they appeared int the rules? I see them in 6th edition, but not in 2nd or 3rd or even Warbots & Death Machines. Warbots came out in 1985 and 7th edition came out in 2016. I don't see the year 6th edition came out. So I am wondering if trolls came out after WH40K Rogue Trader came out (1987) or not. No big reason other than curiosity. I think trolls may be comparable to Dreadnaughts in Rogue Trader, if not even stronger. |

Great question. Do you have Facebook? The Starguard Facebook page is awesome link |

The troll figures look more close to "Terminators" in a space marine context. Something like a "Elementar" soldier for Battle Tech / Mech. Maybe somebody send a group picture here. |

Maybe the trolls are closer to Terminator armour Blaubaer. I completely missed that. Starguard power armor is D(70), so the Trolls have almost twice as much armor at H(130). To put those amounts in perspective, Laser Rifles have a penetration of 80-115 based on range. Infantry Plasma Guns have a penetration of 100-160 based on range. You really need a heavy weapon to have a good chance of taking out a Troll; maybe like at least a Class A Laser 115-160 hopefully at short or medium range. I don't really read Facebook much mrwigglesworth. I prefer to read on sites that cater to gamers. But thanks for mentioning it. I don't have any pictures of Trolls with size comparisons. I guess I need to buy some.

The Troll Assault Armor was not listed in the 4th (or earlier) edition of the rules in 1988. It was included in the 5th edition in 1995. While not definite, the Trolls probably were sculpted after 1987. Also, the 6th ed. has copyright dates of 2010, and 2011 on it so likely was published around that time. |

Thanks for that information Rich. I remember wondering about when people started using Dreadnaughts, or Terminator armour as Blaubaer mentioned, in gaming rules. I wonder if there were movies in that time period that served as inspiration. I need to head on over to a search engine and see what was playing around 1987. |
