What colour would modellers recommend for painting the canvas covers and tilts of British and American vehicles in Normandy in 1944? I have seen various shades from khaki to olive green. I use Vallejo paints so I wonder which one would be most suitable.

Howard Hues Thach works well

The British ones were often camouflaged along with the rest of the vehicle, for eg Mickey Mouse camo the entire top of the vehicle was painted black.

But generally I usually just use a lighter shade of the base colour, or mix up some greens and browns, depending how faded I want it to look.

Canvas tilts for US vehicles were provided by the manufacturers in "olive drab" – which did not necessarily match the official olive drab.

The texture of the canvas usually made it appear darker than it actually was. Then you have variation due to the effects of weather – if the tilt was in constant use it could weather at a different rate to the rest of the vehicle and if it hadn't been used much it could appear more pristine. So a fair bit of license to work with there…
