I bought an AWI collection a few years ago and I still don't know if I will keep it or sell it off. I have around 16 British regiments, and 20 American regiments, plus some artillery and a little cavalry. Unit size ranges from 12-18 figures per battalion/regiment, with 15 figures being pretty common. I played "Rebels and Patriots" at a convention last year and had fun with that. Light and fast-moving, which is what I like. What are you using? |

I have played VnB, Rusty's Rules, Field of Battle, Rebels and Patriots and would like to try Little Wars Tv set Live Free or Die. I love FOB! Rebels and Patriots is easy to run and Live Free or Die has a ton of scenarios. Thanks

Regimental Fire & Fury when I run the game, Guns of Liberty when Mike Wedding runs the game (annually, at the SYW Con). I like both equally. I had some reservations about Live Free or Die when I tried it last year. I wanted to like it, but decided it needed some sorting, and I already have two games I like that don't need any sorting at all. If you don't want your AWI collection, I'll take it. - Ix |

We offer "Saratoga Soldiers", an AWI version of the Gettysburg Soldiers rules. Fast paced, easy to learn ruleset, designed for convention games, and to introduce the AWI period to novices and youngsters. TMP link link |

This is a great period and very different from large European battles. We use Washington's army We play mostly in 15mm usinga 5x3 table size. link Here is a full and proper explanation of how the rules work (very rare when seeking rule information). This is a battle set of rules not skirmish. Good luck in your search. Probably a good idea to buy several sets (if you have the cash) to see how the war is handled on the wargames table by each set? martin

Homebrew I call "Redcoats & Minutemen," but it's not an attempt to seriously recreate tactics or capabilities of real forces— it's just meant for a quick skirmish game with plastic toy soldiers (BMC 1/32 stuff and knock-offs). I enjoy it, but it's not for the hardcore. Think Classic Hollywood version of the AWI, way more Disney than Doctoral Thesis. link (The offer in the blog is still good.) |

James Purky's one-page Fife and Drum rules for big battles with the local group. 6035710456274737910 These give a great game, with excitement and simplicity. British Grenadier for a one-on-one, leisurely all-day affair. Fistful of Lead Horse and Musket for skirmish games. Another simeple, great set of rules with a lot of versatility and applicability for multiple periods and forces. Rick |

@Rich, for VnB, are you using a stand is a brigade, or a stand is a regiment for your big battles? |
Rich Bliss | 17 May 2022 7:24 p.m. PST |
I usually use the wing scale where each stand is half a battalion. Here's the British Advance Guard at Saratoga: British Advanced Guard General Simon Fraser (CC) Exhaustion: 12 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] Grenadiers RW (M6) [ ] [ ] Grenadiers LW (M6) [ ] [ ] Light Infantry RW(M6) [S] [S] Light Infantry LW(M6) [S] [S] 24th RoF RW(M5) [ ] [ ] [ ] 24th RoF LW(M5) [ ] [ ] [ ] |

Thanks. I've heard of the wing scale variant, but I've never seen it played. |

We used Patriots & Loyalists for quite a long period, with quite a few club modifications over the years. Recently though have moved across to a free set called Liberty of Death! which can be found here: link There are also a couple of scenarios to try out too. We have also done some club modifications to these rules and they give a really good game. Liberty or Death! is also less mental maths intense than Patriots and Loyalists for our addled brains. Our club tried British Grenadier a few times, but it did not gel with us. Think it was in part because we only put one game per session in which everyone joins in, so not always easy to put on back to back games using the same rules. British Grenadier seems to be a set that needs quite a few regular plays to get used to the system and nuances. No doubt once you get the hang of them do they are a rewarding game, but not a set of rules that you can get to grips with after only a couple of games. That said have invested in the excellent scenario books. Have not tried the Fire & Fury AWI variant, but will take another look as our club is very familiar with F&F. Thanks, Ezza |

my stuff is all set up for Warfare in the Age of Reason, but, I think I am going to switch to Regimental Fire & Fury. I use F&F, or a variant, for most of my other horse and musket stuff. |

I like Reg F&F for solo play. But the die rolls count a LOT, both in activating units and in charges etc. If it is a smallish game -- Cowpens, say, there will be only a dozen or so match-ups and a bad roll versus a good roll can completely change the outcome. Which is fine for solo play. |

I have two AWI projects (what is wrong with me?) I do Rebels and Patriots using a 3-2-1 mounting system. I also do Regimental Fire and Fury using their mounting system for larger battles. The bottom line is I'm not playing enough games using either system. |
Yellow Admiral | 18 May 2022 7:06 p.m. PST |
I believe I can help with that. I just happen to be running a RF&F game of Monmouth at Enfilade. I think this quandary affects us all. I picked up AWI as an easy period to play occasionally between ACW games, and it basically replaced ACW as my horse & musket gaming period. I can't seem to keep both going at once. Meanwhile, my FPW armies have come out three times and my Napoleonics have never been on the table. They're all competing with aerial games, naval games, and work, and work wins most of the contests for my time and energy. - Ix |

Modified Brother Against Brother rules for games with six or more players, and Sharp Practice for games with four or less players. Both are skirmish rules. Looking forward to trying out Land of the Free or Rebels and Patriots for a higher level game. |
