When Leonid Pliats and his boss were shot in the back by Russian soldiers, the killing was captured on CCTV cameras in clear and terrible detail. The footage, which was obtained by the BBC, is now being investigated by Ukrainian prosecutors as a suspected war crime… BBC: link |

It has become apparent that Russia does not have a deeply professional military. They may have some core elite units, but many of their troops are poorly trained unprofessional conscript, including rabble and trash we see in this story who know that in the chaos they can loot and kill. Most of these types of incidents will never be caught. This is not 1812, or even 1945. You cannot have conscript troops go up against even a relatively modernized military like Ukraine, which is using sensors and communications to coordinate and outsmart the opposition, and use modern ATGMs and combined arms tactics -- and win. As someone else said on another thread -- all Russia really has we should be afraid of is its nuclear arsenal. |

It seems like you slam a little on conscripts as opposed to professional troops. Many Russian "professional" troops also misbehave greatly. Troops in this video are most likely professional troops as it is from the beginning of the war. the atrocities in Bucha was also professional troops. How a soldier is "recruited" (conscript or professional) has nothing to do with how he is trained or his motivation. Israel has conscripts and they have performed good. US army in WWII was conscripted and they performed well. Many professionals in the US are less than motivated my opinion than many conscripts I have met. Russians are useless regardless. |

I am wondering if they emptied their prisons and slapped uniforms on their inmates. |

While I was at university I met a few students from countries with mandatory service and I have to say their descriptions didn't make think that conscription had much to recommend it. Though I'd caveat that with the fact that none of them came from countries known for their conscript militaries. I recall their being plenty of stories in the media during the 2000s about the quality of recruits and conscripts in the Russian army, the poor conditions of service, graft and the high levels of institutional abuse. They painted a picture more akin to Alan Clarke's portrayal of the British borstal in the film Scum than an army. If nothing has really changed it perhaps shouldn't be surprising that the Russian army is behaving at it is. I am wondering if they emptied their prisons and slapped uniforms on their inmates. IIRC from those stories in the 2000s service was an option handed out to young offenders. A fiend of mine (and international studies grad) once told me that peacetime armies are stupider than wartime ones! |

1980s Yugoslavia. I met a couple of lads who were about to do their stint of National Service. They were very definitely not keen…but would have 'done their bit' if required. But they were good, intelligent lads… not scum as many Russians are proving to be. |

Actually security CCTV is pretty good these days. They have gotten so cheap there is no reason for bad CCTV images. Usually you see bad CCTV because it has been copied a bunch of times often by videoing the monitor rather than actual transfer. Mike Bunkermeister Creek |

Seem like candidates for the death penalty. Next time you see a story about Israeli or American 'war crimes' compare it with what you actually saw here. Generally, there is no comparison. Our troops don't act like this. And if they do something remotely like it, we go after them. |
