Snake Island is turning into a nightmare for anyone trying to occupy it.

Drones do seem to be best weapon of war these days.

I wish I could see that in slow motion.

Doesn't look to me like the explosion is a direct strike on the helo, due to its center.

Seeing it in slow-motion might help to understand what happened better, and if it isn't CGI footage.

In a lot of strike footage I've seen, missiles can be seen flying into the target, but I don't see anything like that in this. Not surprising I suppose, for slow drones conducting attacks.

Snake island should be named Taipan island. It is deadly.

The Soviets have put out a statement claimng that it was a Ukrainian Hip, part of an attempt to re-take the Island. Looking at the people ambling out of the Hip in a fairly casual manner I suspect that they are telling porkies!

Tally Ho!

Everything the Russians says should be considered a lie. Russians lie about everything. Even when they lie, they lie…

I would not trust a Russian ever to say the truth.

going back and forth to chopper offloading something
question from a strategic point of view how important is snake island to both sides ,should forces be diverted to other areas instead?

And a position near the Danube

For the island of the Snake there is a battle for several days. Ukraine is trying to recapture it. The Russians are experiencing difficulties due to air defense problems after the death of the Moskva, especially with regard to attacks by unmanned aircraft.
According to unverified information, the following were destroyed in battles:

RF

- 1 border boat
- 1 landing assault boat
- 1 SAM "Tor"
- 1 installation "Strela 10"
- 1 installation ZU-23/2
- 1 Mi-8 helicopter

Ukraine

- 3 Su-24 bombers
- 1 fighter 1 Su-27
- 3 UAVs "Bayraktar"
- 1 Mi-24 helicopter
- 3 Mi-8 helicopters
- landing assault boat "Stanislav"
- missile boat / corvette / coast guard ship "Grigory Kuropyatnikov"

Human losses on both sides are unknown.

As confirmation, there is only video from Ukrainian attack drones. So we will know the exact information only after the war.
At the moment, the island is empty, abandoned by all parties to the conflict.

And yet this island actually "locks" the possibility of using the port of Odessa. According to rumors, a large amount of wheat grain is now concentrated in this port for export to Europe.

The longer this goes on the more I feel sorry for the Russian troops. They are fighting an unnecessary war for an egotistical dictator. They are, at best, half trained and equipped with outdated gear. They truly have been betrayed by their leaders.

Here is a link to assessment by Igor Strelkov that seems to match with Cuprum's version.

There is no visuals shown supporting the Ukrainian attempted occupation, and it seems like it wouldn't make any sense to perform this move. If the island was to be occupied, why bomb the island first to destroy fuel and munitions?

It is obvious the island is not easily defended, why would Ukraine try to hold the island at this point?
I don't have the knowledge of the what is happening to make any claim if it did / did not happen…

Also, possibly another Russian landing craft in the area?

The Russians apparently thought the TOR would be enough to safeguard the occupation of the island.

Four Russian patrol boats sunk so far.

Soledad +1 as well …

But as we know amphib ops are very "challenging" … Or if not properly supported, holding any terrain is not always an easy task. But again, an amphib forced entry op is not an easy mission. If the defender is prepared …

soledad10 May 2022 11:35 a.m. PST

It would have been an excellent job for the USMC. Units who have the mission of amphibian attacks against defended shores need to be on top of their game big time.

It is considered one of the most difficult missions there is. Even with proper preparations it is a risky business. (Yet all of them have succeeded…) To my knowledge no-one serious attempt have failed. Weird. (Depends on how you consider Dunkirk, invasion or raid…

Forced entry ops are always risky by sea or air.
