May 6, 1864, in the second day of the battle of the Wilderness Grant had split the Army of Northern Virginia in half and was on the verge of winning the war. The Texas Brigade, a mere 800 strong, charged into a three-sided pocket to plug the hole. In despair, Lee himself tried to lead them, but the Texans shouted "Lee to the rear!" and refused to charge until he retired to a safer place. They then went in hard, filling the gap and losing half their strength. Great great grand-uncle J. J. McBride, acting major commanding half of the 5th Texas Regiment, was among the wounded, shot through both legs and not expected to live.

We are the middle of another of the cyclical attempts to tear down Lee's reputation, but there has never been a commander more beloved by his men.

Very true. Nor has there been a commander so respected by his enemies. That says a great deal about his character.
