Russia/Putin really have not lost their war of aggression. They didn't take near as much of Ukraine as they planned. But now they are throwing their dwindling assets into a meatgrinder likened to WWI.

Putin plans on fighting and continuing to attrite not only the Ukrainian Forces but to a much larger degree to his own. Until the e.g. the US, etc. will push for brokered peace. As the Ukraine will take too many loses, etc. Putin will hold the Donbas and still Crimea. Claiming victory …

And probably he or his successor using those territories as a spring board to attack the Ukraine again in the future. In 10 years or so once they have rebuilt their forces.
