The US Army has given a birthday cake to an Italian woman – to replace one that American soldiers stole from her as it cooled by a window 77 years ago…

"Stole" is such a harsh word. I'm glad that she finally got her cake.

Well … better late than never …

When I was in the ROK, '84-'85. Our Mess was force issued cakes & cupcakes as they about to expire shortly. We were on the DMZ so we were running combat patrols & Mech ops training, etc. Pastries don't travel well in both those type of ops. So we issued them to all the units on ops. As well as everyone at our FOB, Warrior Base.

So what was not consumed and still in containers. Instead of throwing them out, as they were considered "consumed/used up". Told my driver to get our Jeep & trailer. Told the Mess NCO to load up my jeep trailer. With all the unopened cakes & cupcakes.

Our Bn Cdr came by and asked what I was going to do with all of those? I said, "Sir, going to improve US-Korean relations. Going to give every Korean we see as driving along the DMZ. A Cake or Cup Cakes." …

He said go for it. And there were many locals very surprised, when they were given pastries from the Americans. That day …

True story …

Hmmm, a pity it took so long, but interesting that they followed through.

The Koreans liked it ! And I'd hate to have my mess tms throw all those cakes & cupcakes away.
