This gentleman makes some very interesting points: YouTube link He has unearthed footage of the Nanuchka class corvette Mirazh engaging a Georgian ship in 2008. He makes the point that the crew are shirtless, not wearing uniforms, have no 'anti-flash' gear and at one stage an officer is seen hitting a dial on an instrument panel because it does not work. Many of the crew appear listless, are not at action stations and appear to be just standing around. He makes the point that if these scenes were repeated on the Moskva then it may explain their willingness to abandon ship early as lack of even a shirt is not the way to fight a fire or deal with smoke-logged corridors. The crew appear unmotivated and lacking in even basic equipment. Barry |

As a former CG officer, completely concur. If that video of the engine room control was taken during battle, it is no wonder they lost the Moskva. In a fire, those guys are toast, literaly! |

So, will we ever know how many nuclear armed subs they are losing in this war, through their own incompetence… ? Anyone remember their "Doomsday Nuke Tsunami Torpedo" they boasted about last year and around 2015 and 2018? Russian Oligarchic superyachts look tip-top, though. |

USN retired 1974 to 2003. There is no air conditioning (AC) or it is not working on the corvette. Electronic equipment does not work well if not cooled. Men will not wear flash gear if it is extremely hot. During the Falkland War the British gave the US after action reports. One was that it was more important to keep the AC on max to allowing the crew to wear heavy clothing to help protect them from missiles strikes. Because it was not only the missile warhead but, also unspent fuel of the missile which caused damage. Sadly the USN disregarded this lesson learned. The Moskva was first commissioned in 1983 she was 39 years old. I have doubts that all of her systems were operational. Russians are not known for their excellence in naval refits or repair. |

They probably would have passed out if they had flash gear on. |

Georgian war was fought around the second week of August 2008. Around that time of the year, it can get quite hot around the Black Sea. At the time Moskva was sunk, weather was probably significantly cooler. I would presume that the Russian and Soviet naval craft are typically designed with cold rather than hot weather conditions in mind. |

One of the memes making the rounds on FB is of one of the final scenes from the movie Red Oktober, where the US Sec Def (IIRC) is asking the Russian Admiral/Sec Def about the loss of a second sub, in addition to the first one lost. In this case though, they've changed the wording to read something like the following, "you mean you to tell me that you lost your Flagship to a country you are engaged in a land war with, that doesn't even have a navy" (or something like that). Too funny!!! |
