Hi

I've used Empire for decades but if I stopped using the rules and Do Not wish to rebase all my figures can you sugggest an alternative which uses 8 to 12 figure battalions?

Thanks

These videos list Napoleonic rules by scale, or the size of battle you wish to fight. If you are using empire you may need a set of rules which has flexible base sizes and unless you wish to change the scale of game, look at the corps video.

Brigade/Division: youtu.be/xU864t-aCBU
Corps: youtu.be/DXJDR6p7E_A
Small Army: youtu.be/5U--NhX9Vxw
Large Army: youtu.be/MhCOCWaeyxM

My top of the head recommendation is The Age of Eagles, the units can vary in size but 12 figures, or multiples of 12 figrues, seem reasonable. Another suggestion is BBNB, but its designed to reproduce large battles so may not be suitable.

Grand Battles Napoleon by Siege Work Studios might suit your requirements.

Provided you can organise on frontage multiples of 20mm or 3/4" (which is the general Empire standard) you should be able to use the rules straight out of the box. E.g 12 figures would be 6x2 on 60mm or 2.25".

The rules use the robust Konig Krieg engine , pimped up to model napoleonic warfare at regiment level.

Le Feu Sacre uses Empire basing

Try Snappy Nappy. I have the II Prussian Corps at Waterloo in Empire, and easily converted that into the complete Prussian Army. It is fast, simple and great fun.

RG, might want to look at something like V&B, Lasalle or Blucher, where basing is immaterial and you can put everything in a tray. But I'm with you: rebasing as a last resort--if then.

Most rules these days are pretty flexible about basing and nominal figure ratios: I can't see why you couldn't use Blucher, Black Powder, General de Armee, Et Sans Resultat, Neil Thomas' Napoleonic Wargaming, Polemos or whatever.

Do you have any other criteria for your choice?

Pick any good Battalion level rule set.
Some of the rules recommended above are not battalion level.
And Some don't use anything resembling Empire basing.

I've found that basing is really not that important so long as both sides are roughly the same. Basing "recommendations" in rules are mostly just showing how the rules author's figures are based.

The Carnage and Glory system allows you to us any figure scale and basing as long as the ground scale is consistent. The CG system has been around since Empire III days and continually updated, including an update last week.

The only problem with Age of Eagles is that the bases are small because you need a lot of them to file out the OOBs.

I own most of the rules mentioned and I agree that basing has become much less important in most rules as long as both sides are the same size more or less.

I agree. I like the rules but the game require a large playing area for several days and a lot of figures. I have the figures, but i no longer have the room. Its the main reason i am using BBB and Napoleon at War (figure game version of the SPI boardgame). I can normally remain seated for most of the game and can complete a game in 2-4 hours. Two weeks ago I completed Jena-Auerstedt in 4 hours, including setup/packup (and lost, just). I must admit Its a hard battle to get a good game from once you know what to do. This is a common issue for historical battles. Now i am working on Austerlitz and I have discovered its even harder.

I enjoy Corps Command IV by Hoplite Research Group.

It is designed for 12 man units, but is very flexible. My troops are based on WRG Horse & Musket, and a friend has troops based on Napoleon's Battles. They both work seamlessly (even in the same game). The rules are innovative and I find them a lot of fun. A game can be played to a result in 2-4 hours. Once you figure out the rules, it is easy to teach new players.

One drawback: The rules are a bit eccentrically edited. I feel they are worth the effort. After you figure out how they play, the game is very intuitive.
