I am painting up German units for Market Garden using Rapid Fire. I know the Fallschirmjäger wore cammo smocks. Did the Panzergrenadiers all wear cammo? Did the SS? I am pretty sure the Luftwaffe and Naval Battalions did not. If a unit did wear cammo, did everyone wear the same pattern?

The Luftwaffe had splinter b camo.

The navy also had camouflage, but I don't know in what numbers. You can have a lot of fun with naval troops as they had quite a combination of uniforms and equipment.

Most of the SS troops would have worn the two piece light wieght pea dot camo uniforms.

By this time there was a lot of camouflage being worn in the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS. From what I have discovered, I use the following as a rule of thumb:

1 – Waffen SS. Mostly in the pea-dot camouflage however, some would be wearing older smocks in various patterns. Also there would be some in field grey trousers with camouflage tops and vice-versa.

2 – Heer. Still mostly field grey but some in splinter pattern camouflage smocks or trousers. Not as widespread as the Waffen SS.

3 – Luftwaffe. Field divisions in splinter pattern jackets. Fallschirmjager mostly with splinter pattern smocks though some in the older grey-green version.

4 – Kriegsnmarine. I do not have much on these people but I suspect that it will be much like the Heer.

Hope that helps.

Smocks and cloth helmet covers should be camouflage.
Oh… And zeltbahn if you have figures wearing something looks like a poncho.

The photos of IInd SS Panzer Corps show a huge variety of camo patterns (or none at all). Some of the battalions entraining for Germany had handed all their combat gear in, including their webbing, so had stuff ammunition in their tunic pockets.

Many of the FJ were still in green smocks (right until 1945)

To make life easy, I generally use figures in a lot of camo as panzergrenadiers (be they SS or Heer), figures in some camo as the better Heer units (KG Knaust etc) and figures in plain field grey for all the sailors, airmen, reserve units etc. FJ are FJ, obviously.
