Ha!
My mother was a Yugoslav before becoming a British citizen and when I was small enough she would read me stories which involved the baba yaga.
For many year's no one else seemed to have heard of her until the end of the Soviet.
It was about the same time that my mother told me of the murder at the hands of the Nazis and the Croatian puppet state of my family members in concentration camps which later became known as the Serbian genocide not to confused with the Bosnian genocide.
So when told about the Holocaust at school I spoke about what happened to all my family and was told by the teacher "i didn't know you were Jewish"
To which I replied "I'm not"
Then I was called a liar and told of in front of the class.
It is one thing to lose your family in such a way and have the sympathy of the world its quite something else to have the same experience and not be believed!
Its a part of my family history which had to be shut away for most of my life; it is like the sardonic old witch who set impossible tasks for Vasilisa she set an impossible task for me!
I can hear her cruel voice "suck it up you worthless sniveling little $#!+ god didn't chose you he hate's now get up and stop feeling sorry for your self or I'll eat you"
The thing about baba yaga is she really on your side but she is to wild and crazy to let you know that till you leave that chicken leged hut and go back home. |
