Regular forum browsers will have noticed a dozen or so posts from me over the past fifteen months reporting on a succession of refights of historical battles from the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849. This week we fought the fifteenth and final battle. Here are the photo-reports of battles #14 (Szőreg):

and #15 (Temesvár):

It is gratifying to have completed such a substantial sequence of battles at a steady rate of one a month – high enough to sustain interest, moderate enough to allow variety of other games in between. Inevitably the cast of players changed a bit, but the core team got to play the great majority of games. It's been a really interesting and educational way to follow the course of the war and become familiar with the generals, the regiments, and the armies.

These games also served as playtests for the resulting "Bloody Big Hungary '48 Battles!" campaign book that is consequently now almost ready for publication so that other gamers can have as much fun from these scenarios as we have.

Dear @ChrisBBB2, I pay my respect for your stubbornness in your project. As you can see in my post here, or on my blog I am dealing with the Austrian Uhlans Regiments (4 in total) in 1848.
I know that Nr. 3 (Erzherzog Karl Luwdig) and Nr. 4 (Kaiser Ferdinand) fought on the Italian front, while the 1st Regiment fought at the Battle of Iszaszeg; I know the distinctive colours of their czapka's (yellow 1st, green 2nd, red 3rd and white 4th) as well I know the name of the 2 Italians Regiments (i.e. the Inhaber) but I don't know the name of the 2 other regiments, as I don't know if the 2nd Regiment fought in the Hungarian front. Any idea? thanks

Thanks, Scott!

Miki: the Civallart-Uhlanen served in Hungary during the Winter Campaign of 1848-1849. The Army of the Danube in June 1849 included Civallart-Uhlanen and Kaiser-Uhlanen. The Army of the South included 2 sqns of Schwarzenberg-Uhlanen as well as some Civallart-Uhlanen. I can't tell you regimental numbers or colours. I hope this much helps as far as it goes.

Dear Chris:
here the answer:

1st Uhlanen-Regiment (yellow czapka) "Graf von Civalart" (fought in Hungary)

2nd Uhlanen-Regiment (green czapka) "Freiherr von Hammerstein"
(fought in Hungary) but probably still remembered as von Schwarzemberg"

3rd Uhlanen-Regiment (red czapka) "Graf von Gruenne" but probably still remebered as "Erzherzog Karl Ludwig"; fought in Northern Italy

4th Uhlanen-Regiment (white czapka) "Kaiser Ferdinand" then during the period "Kaiser Franz Joseph"; fought 1848 in Northern Italy and in 1849 in Hungary.

3rd Regiment

An update – having finished the campaign, we also finished the long-promised scenario book, "Bloody Big HUNGARY '48 Battles!". Details on the BBBBlog here:

You have a knack for bringing underrepresented conflicts to the forefront. Congratulations on launching the book, it seems like it was a long work in progress.

Thanks, Shugyosha! I do like the esoteric corners of history. That said, the '48 has been a particularly serious effort for me – not just the wargames and resulting scenario book, but also three books on the war translated from German and Hungarian, published or in press with Helion. Don't expect me to put the same effort into the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885!
