I'd like to think this is due to my 30-year mission to give Paul Sawyer a nervous tick. But maybe they somehow decided that Space Dwarves weren't such a stupid idea after all. Imagine that.

Also, I kind of forget, but I may have at some point sworn a blood oath to paint and field a 10,000 point army of these guys should this ever come to pass.

I also meant ot be a multi millionaire by this point, so there's that. I'll just try and be happy, and be ready to hit the ground running when they drop.

Just know that you can cross out a whole page of your book of grudges.

Cool! I knew they'd be back/still around.

Where to begin…

First it's meant to be pronounced Wotan, at least according to my Dr Who DVD.

Perhaps this has come about 10 years too late as they are now, I'm not sure of the correct term, "inclusive"?? I hear peddled, something like that. As they aren't called squats, only nasty people call them that, but the good guys will still find a reason to pick a fight with them. How very inclusive.

Also looks like they stripped them of their culture, sure they're still short, but that's all that seems the same.

Maybe too many people have been turning up at tournaments with forge father's armies??

It's a case of, slap a GW sticker on it and it will sell. Probably right, unfortunately.

FYI Paul Sawyer is at Warlord, last I checked anyway.

PS Hang on, did GW just call itself nasty, as they were calling them squats for years?

I doubt most 40K players today know anything about Squats. "Many years before you were born, back when 40K was fun,…"

The Land train is fuel and ready to rock and roll the Grim Dark Future.

I'd really rather they finished their Horus Heresy line before they started any new armies.

I saw the term "squat" reverting to a (possibly unflattering) outsider moniker (like "limeys") coming for many years. As much as I love the little fellows- they were the very first 40 minis I picked up- I didn't see them referring to themselves as squats, and wondered when GW would get around to ammending that.

Yes, Paul ran off to Warlord, and is head of product design, or something.

I don't know what they plan to do with their culture. But I'm certain their reinvention will be limited by two factors:

First, they can't be too much like fantasy dwarves, be cause that's "done" and "passe", especailly in a company that's renamed their fantasy orcs "orruks", and all that. So I believe they will be moving away from that to some degree. The Saxon / Viking vibe they began to develop starting with the White Dwarf #111 update, and carrying through the unreleased / limited release test models after the faction went into stasis when 2nd ed. came out. Even following the surprise release of the Necromunda squat, who bore a pretty close resemblamce to the original (awesome) classic Perry models, I don't think theyve ever entertaained the idea of going back in that direction.

Secondly, IMO, the Kharadon Overlords are a very sci-fi faction that laid stake to a lot of concepts that the squats might have cashed in on, especially the lostech-boosted direction they went with. While it has been convenient to use sqaut models as proxy Imperial Guard (or whatever the kids call them these days), I always thought a dwarf with flak armor and a lasgun was like driving a bulldozer to the grocery store. I gave my guys mesh/flak composite armor (allowed in Rogue Trader), or a mithril mesh or scale to adjust for many of the perry models dress. just sayin'.

I guess they aren't the first, Lizardmen, Tyranids, perhaps suffering the biggest stupidest changes, pre AOS.

To clarify, Saurus are big and dumb and do not ride cold ones.

Tyranids are meant to be some bizaro far flung alien race, not looking like creatures that evolved on this world. Although I appreciate the idea of them mutating, using more local DNAs. And the new warriors look cool, but not cooler. The zoanthrops (not spelt coreptly) seem to be a flip, with the older ones looking more earth based and the newer more alien, weird.

I guess it comes down to if new kids will buy the not squats. Some may, but after pushing super marines so much it may not be enough. Older folks will either buy them for the brand, when other comps are making more squatty not squats, or say there not the same and avoid them. Both being older folks who would still be seen caught dead in a GW store, so it's kinda few.

An interesting one to watch.

As they aren't called squats

I believe there is a Trademark ™️ problem. I'm still working on the the Eldar *cough* Aeldari releases.

Does this mean all the stunties I have now are obsolete? What shall I do with them all??!!

The H Man03 Apr 2022 1:24 a.m. PST

"Trademark ™️ problem"

Not on necromunda, apparently.

Would be nice to hear more on that angle though. Probably because it's not a made up word. What about Usquaties or GsquatsW, look at that branding baby!

Augustus03 Apr 2022 9:47 a.m. PST

Thanks. Name doesn't mean so much as I still think of them as space dwarves. I prefer the old style Squats though. These new versions just look like Infinity-wannabes.

Honestly, the competition in this genre-scale is so ridiculously crowded I am amazed new products really have a chance…like how many armies can you have?

Regardless, amazing news. Even GW must walk backwards from time to time.

The Beast Rampant03 Apr 2022 10:58 a.m. PST

Does this mean all the stunties I have now are obsolete? What shall I do with them all??!!

As an odd coincidence, for a month now, my workbench has been cluttered with squats I decided to finish off after decades- many having been dubbed "table ready", but not truly completed.

And they'll be finished off soon. That's what I'm doing with mine. :)

The H Man03 Apr 2022 1:45 p.m. PST

You could always sell them, if this has you pulling your hair out.

Question is, does this put their money value up or down??

Sellers may list big prices, as squats are now top of mind because of this news. On the other hand, some may feel new models may compete and drop their prices. Probably most likely they will go up as this draws attention to them, "oh yeah, I'm meant to be building an old squat army," and because this really puts a lid on the older model range making them more collectable as a piece of history.

The Beast Rampant wailed –

Use them with people who aren't miserable slaves to GW orders?

Play them with different rules? "Grimdark Future" is a great fast play system. Really popular among my local crowd.

Sell them? I can assure you, someone will want "obsolete" and non-functioning mins* and in many cases pay very good prices for them (DW 2.5 Spartan player here. Take my word )

*If that is even a thing,. which I doubt.

The Beast Rampant03 Apr 2022 10:08 p.m. PST

Hey now, Walrus! That was a quote. I love my stunties, and am spiffing them up for what will be their first action in very nearly twenty years.

joedog04 Apr 2022 1:15 p.m. PST

"I'd really rather they finished their Horus Heresy line before they started any new armies."

Space Dwarfs – by whatever name – are certainly NOT a new army for 40k.

Insomniac07 Apr 2022 1:51 a.m. PST

You've seen one miniature, one drawing and three blacked out drawings… and it seems that the conclusion is in already?

I reckon I'll wait and see what else arrives before I'll right them off just yet.

I'm also looking forward to a codex that has some background for what happened over the last 30 years… it could be an interesting read… or it's bound to be rubbish, why should I bother Nay-nay-nay ;) …
