Been looking to work an ACW project that has potential for historical frontages and linear appearance; but I still want to have two ranks of figs to get that "mass" look. [previously, I did 15mm and played oritinal Johnny Reb, but I don't like the large depth compared to the width of 15mm figures; plus 15s seem to be getting bulkier all the time]. I got a 6mm project but it is just too hard for me to see what I'm painting these days! So looking to get rid of them and get taller / bigger figs. Most likely 9-10mm ACW figures that are not very bulky, perhaps a bit slender and tall proportionately. Would like them to have little flash and be harder metal, as in not the softer old lead figures. Sort of like the old Scruby N-scale, but with some more detail and variety. Also looking for ease of painting, maybe even a speed-painting project. It seems like the Johnny Reb rules have gone down to 10mm over the years, and the scale is a lot more popular. Thanks for any thoughts. |

Only the main battle troops are in strips. Skirmishes, artillery, cav, generals, etc are not. I hope that helps. Russ Dunaway |

I never look at anything in 10mm without seeing what Pendraken has to offer. |

Problem with OG is if you go with them they won't match up basing wise with any other MFG, but they are nice and easy to paint. I second Crackerline. |

Hey, Stalkey and Co, I have dozens of Pendragon ACW and other accessories: Love 'em. I have hundreds of Good Ground miniatures, both ACW and Mexican War: wonderful figures. Boats too! I have thousands of Old Glory 10mm ACW! They are not necessarily better, although the are some great things going on. Like if you get the Rebel and Union skirmishers, you can mix and match Rebs into Yankees and visa-versa. And you can create firing lines if you want. The real power is The marching and advancing figures, which will make up the bulk of your army. The marching guys are neat, with 3 different types (groups of 5) in each bag. This is kind of good and kind of annoying. Usually if troops dropped their kit, the entire regiment did so, not some. And the mixing of headgear can make painting up a special unit difficult. But I have noticed that going along, as long as I wasn't that fiddly, everything looks great. The 5 figures are just about 1" wide. I trimmed a wee bit from each end to fit nicely on a Litko 1" square base. Two ranks, by the way, so 10 figures on a base. The Advancing figures are nice, too, but most of them seem to be looking off to the right! I don't know what they're looking at, but it makes painting their faces a little easier. These guys are a little wider than the Marching guys, so I cut off a figure to create a 4 wide strip. Then I use the cut off guys to make more stands or arrange them on a skirmisher base. 2 ranks on a 1" square. 8 figures here. I use them to indicate smoothbore musket troops. I leave more room to the rear for unit markings or labels. The command strips are the same in both sets. There are unique command strips in the Iron Brigade and Zouave bags. Here is the real beauty of the Old Glory strips: They paint up twice as fast as individual figures! That's right: at least twice as fast! And there are other shortcuts. You don't have to detail the rear of the front rank, nor the frond of the back rank. I usually spray Rust Oleum black primer (3 bucks a can) on a line of troops tacked to an ahhh stick (tongue depressor). Then match it to another. The first stick is the Front rank, the matching one the back rank. The "inside" of the troops need just the bare minimum of paint. I can do 3 regiments of 6 bases each (36 strips of figures or 180 total) in a day! Also, I joined Old Glory's Army Discount Plan for a whopping 40% off! (I hope that's right.) It made for planning and purchasing a lot easier. If you send me your email address, I can send a bunch of pics. (It's just not very easy to post here.) cheers, [jfsudek<at>yahoo.com] |

At one time in the long long ago I was building some 6mm Napoleonic armies using a couple manufacture's figs. After gluing down 1000s of the tiny little devils ---with a good amount constantly tipping over I finally gave up. THEN --when we came out with the 10mm at Old Glory I could see the same difficulty with this tiny scale --thus --- The strips were born. I personally feel the greatness in Warlord's "epic battles" is also the strips which brings the ease of not only mounting, but as already mentioned above, the painting. Also, with the OG army card and the cost of shipping today --if your based in the U.S --then I do not see the price being beat. But to each his own. Russ Dunaway |

I second the Good Ground figures. Owner Bill Moreno is a great guy. (Guy who does his light and medium artillery and wagons is a SUPER great guy,,,,,) For heavy garrison guns GHQ can't be beat. |

Stalky and co. Whatever miniatures you use 10mm is a very good choice. I love them. At the age of 72 I am so personally heavily invested in 15/18 I am not about to reverse that. But if I was starting out I would -- no doubt go 10mm. As I mentioned earler --had my short lived foray into 6 mm years ago and just found them way to small. They did not give me " the look" I had anticipated. I understand why people like 25/28 mm -- but for my desires of large units and battles with flanks and maneuver space they are just to large. Either way, always let us know if we can be of assistance. Happy gaming to you also. Russ Dunaway |

Thanks for all the recommendations. I almost went with 15mm Old Glory, but in the end am running with Epic ACW / Kallistra. Small enough for "mass effect" like 10mm, but a bit easier for me to see. Has a lot to do with the sculpting techniques of the plastic Epic stuff. The Kallistra is to flesh a few things out, which shoudl work out. |
