Hell everyone, Does anyone have any information on the size of Swiss banners and Swiss "Fähnlein" pennants? Thank you. |

There is a surviving landesbanner from Appenzell (an associate rather than full member in 1476). It is dated 1400-1500, so rather vague. It is about 120cm square. A Zurich hauptbanner from 1437 is about 129cm square (plus the long thin red schwenkel). Unless anyone has anything more concrete, it looks like 120 – 130 cm square is a reasonable size. It would seem to match the size shown in illustrations too, though these are often misleading. I haven't found anything for any pennant sizes – I think using the period pictures and comparing to the square banners may be as good as you'll get. A bit later, the flags became larger. A banner from Zurich from 1512 is about 180cm square (plus schwenkel). |
