Is there a certain or advised number of decks for a number of commands? That is to ask, should I have one deck of 80 cards for every group of 4 commands? What is the largest number of units one should have in a single command? On reviewing the rules, it appears that generals have a command radius of two boxes. Units outside of this, save for skirmishers and light cavalry, etc., are not impacted by this limitation. Any other advice for a solo wargamer thinking about "jumping in with both feet into the deep end of To The Strongest!"? Thanks in advance. Chris |

I have run 6 player games of TtS with no problems. I gave each player their own deck. I bought small decks for $1 USD so they don't overwhelm the look of the game. We could just as easily have played with 1 or 2 decks (luck would remain the same overall). But multiple decks just made things easier. For solo play I'd just do one deck for each side. I made commands between 8-12 units. Enough for a player to have choices with command radii etc. More than that gets cumbersome. So we had about 30 units per side with each player being a command. So Player A might move a lot with good cards, and player B might pull an Ace on the first go!

Is there a certain or advised number of decks for a number of commands? That is to ask, should I have one deck of 80 cards for every group of 4 commands? As a general rule, I'd say you'd want a deck per player, or 4 commands. But if you are gaming solo one big deck would do nicely, composed of the numbered cards from 3 or 4 decks of playing cards. What is the largest number of units one should have in a single command? Perhaps 5 units? The smaller the command, the more efficient it will be. So it would be nice to have the more elite troops in small commands, whilst the hoi polloi are in larger ones. Good luck! |

Hi Or just use D10's instead of playing cards cards! We also use numbered chits put against a unit to remind us what the last 'activation' score was. To us it looks so much better than covering the table with cards. To the Strongest! is an excellent set of wargame rules which ever method you decide to use. Last week four of us had an excellent Wars of the Roses game with each person commanding two commnands with about 6 or 7 units in each command. Cheers Paul |

One deck per side is fine if you play solo. You might want to have 2 decks per side if the game is big and use one for the left half of the table and one for the right. For in person games, I usually try to have 1 deck per player, although two players can share a deck in a pinch. I'd agree, 6 units per command is about the upper limit of practicality; more units id composed mostly or solely of Light Troops, fewer if all or mostly expensive formed troops. For in person games, I try to have 2 commands per player. link

Gentlemen, Thanks one and all for the rapid and cogent and sensible replies. I will certainly look these over and make decisions as the planning phase proceeds. Thinking that OBs will be firmed up (points and victory medals determined) before I make final decision on number of decks, cards, or chits. Thanks again for the help! Cheers, Chris |
