"The Matilda infantry tank, or MK-II, as it was called in Soviet documents, became one of the most famous foreign-made fighting vehicles used by the Red Army. Having appeared in the USSR in the fall of 1941 together with Valentine, these tanks had time to fight near Moscow, after which they participated in many operations in the first half of 1942. A very peculiar combat vehicle earned an ambiguous reputation among Soviet tankers. She was loved for her reliable armor, while she was scolded for her slowness and weak weapon. Be that as it may, the last time Matilda tanks were used massively on the Soviet-German front was in the summer of 1944, while other vehicles fought until the end of the war…." UT Main page link

With its thick armor the Germans had trouble with taking on Matildas in France in 1940. And even later in North Africa. They had to turn to their 88s at times. Good armor, slow speed, below average main gun. But worked well in some cases … |

Matildas against the italians in N. Africa fared well, thanks to their armour, pratically invulnerable to the standard 47 mm. AT guns, they where the spearhead of the attack on Bardia & Tobruk. On the contrary, against the german heavier guns didn't end well, as at Battleaxe, where a brigade lost almost all its tanks against well dug AT guns. Sadly it was too tight to allow an heavier gun in the turret, so it wasn't possible improving the firepower with the new 6 pdr, as for the Crusader or the Valentine(not that worked so well for either) |

The valentine was quite successful and extremely popular with the soviets. |
