As we sometimes do like the gentlemen we are!
I was told by my Tac Officers in Inf Ofc Basic, that he could make me an officer … but never a gentleman. 😁

"The question really is competence and fitness for office…".
That has come up more frequently it appears.

"Without this POTUS we would not be in NATO by now".

That assertion is just silly AND wrong

+1 Thresher … Well I'd go with wrong. Many older NATO members have said it was no longer needed. As we see they were very wrong. The past POTUS's point & it almost worked. Was NATO has to pay their fair share and carry their own weight. So he was not the first one to mention NATO may be not worth the cost to the USA. Businessman vs career politicians.

Regardless, NATO really never was going to go away. As we see with 9/11, many NATO nations were with us in A'stan. And were there until the debacle of the withdrawal from A'stan. But that is another topic for another day. UK, France, German, Dutch, etc. They thought it was a bad idea to totally pull out of A'stan. As did some US GENs.

As we see currently a similar situation with Putin in the Ukraine … he neither listened to his intel or senior officers. A'stan's withdrawal was a very poor decision to leave as we did. Putin's invasion is a debacle … as well.

A Career Politian vs a Former KGB Spy … we see similar results. Why .. ? They did not listen to the intel or they GENs IMO/AFAIK.

Maybe wrong, but he's the one who said he was planning to do it in his second term. Or maybe this was like saying our military was completely restored by him.

Again, I do not hear Putin talking back at Biden. Not buddies.

You think it's Biden's fault that Russian generals are not picking up the phone? I hope they have a good supply of these guys, they must be kinda busy getting killed and counting tanks right now.

We are in Europe for our own defense, part of the core strategy was to check Soviets there. Picking up the tab is not the main point, valid or not, we did not need the PR circus, it weakened the image of the alliance, alienated not just leaders, but general populations.

Instability is not strength. Diplomacy does not only take place in front of tv cameras. You don't make the whole show about how much each of you friends is paying.

There were strong moments for the previous guy, as in the Middle East. Europe was not one of them. Nobody gets everything exactly right. Or everything wrong. Not listening to intelligence made a mess of Afghanistan. Getting by without taking your briefings is just luck.

All IMO. If we all agreed, what kind of fun is that?

Good quote, Legion. We can all be gentlemen after we get home!

"….we did not need the PR circus, it weakened the image of the alliance….".

Who cares about the "image", since his comments and threats actually "strengthened" the NATO alliance. A number of nations, including Germany, promised to increase their defense spending for their military forces, since the threats and callouts were made.

Some of them actually kept their word and did increase their spending.
