Life is too short to play your buddy's Brain Fart scenario that they promised was balanced this time.

All games should have Points.

I guess all games can have points, but that doesn't mean that the points should be equal.

I prefer historical scenarios whenever possible. But since some in my club insist on points, I play along so as to get them to participate in my historical scenarios. For me points systems are a pain to use. You use the victory conditions to balance the scenario. Not every battle is equal, one side or the other almost always has an advantage, otherwise why fight the battle?

Points systems do seem to be a contentious issue. There are many gamers for whom not having one is a big deal. I admittedly would characterize them as lazy, but then I like doing scenarios – at least for the periods I am really interested in (e.g. FIW/SYW, AWI, & WWII). If there is a points system, I just treat it as another resource to help me "balance" the scenario's victory conditions.

Somewhat hypocritically, when I infrequently play ancients, it is almost always a points-based tournament style game. In which case the one comment I would have is, if you are going to have a points system, especially for tournament style games, it had better actually work.
