YouTube link That's gonna hurt – and someone has already updated wikipedia! Initial reports say it was carrying ammunition. |

I heard it was two ships as well … Good shoot'm ! |

Both the ships which got underway appear to have fires forward of the superstructure. The nearest of the two has some white smoke, the furthest has a major fire. FWIW I was impressed at how fast both ships cleared the pier, not always easy to do quickly for any number of reasons. |

FWIW I was impressed at how fast both ships cleared the pier I suspect the proximity of landing ship, potentially loaded with ammo, may have focused the minds of the bridge crew. No idea what the further ship was but that fire looked pretty vicious. The Russian's aren't trying that Japanese trick of delivering supplies on the decks of warships are they? If its an actual warship that's probably not a good place to have a fire! |

I saw somewhere the burning ship was Ropoucha class. |

Reportedly, the Orsk was sunk. The Tapir was heavily damaged. |

IIRC the Orsk was involved in the seizure of Crimea – there's some payback in that sinking! |

Naturally, I hope the Ukrainians nailed that landing ship, but remember, we basically know nothing about what's going on in the war zone -- it could be some Russian naval rating was careless smoking. Who knows what kind of vessels are those escaping? Is that an Udaloy-class in front? |
| Inch High Guy | 24 Mar 2022 11:10 a.m. PST |
The nearer ship underway is a Ropucha-class, they are a small amphibious assault ship. The further one appears to be a Ropucha as well, but it's harder to see through the smoke. |

Russian TV had posted video of the Orsk's arrival, along with a boast that Russian air defense had shot down several missiles fired into the area. According to some reports, the Ukrainians were able to target the Orsk based on the location given in the videos. While the Orsk was said to have been destroyed, fire reportedly spread to other vessels as well as an ammunition depot and a fuel terminal in the port. BBC: link |

That will complicate Russian planning. |

That will complicate Russian planning. Seems they are not very good at that … |

The nearer ship appears to have its firefighting/fire suppression gear on. Given the objects being hurled into the air from the Orsk, the most likely reason would be than some burning debris fell on the deck. That could result is damage so slight that it just requires chipping and repainting. |

Be interesting when and if they get Harpoons. Maybe Putin can then view his navy like the Ayatollah had to view his, from a glass bottom boat. 😉 |

There's some satellite imagery of the two Ropucha-class vessels afterthey departed the port. One of them appeared to be circling multiple revolutions (steering damage?) and the other was keeping a safe distance from the other. |

Satellite imagery on Twitter: link Unconfirmed reports also suggest there may have been eight sailors killed on the Tsesar Kunikov and three killed and three injured on the Novocherkassk. More analysis on The Drive: link |

What we don't see is evacuations. There are no troops on those landing ships. When they brought the landing ships in close but did not conduct a landing I wondered if they were just a diversion, trying to get the Ukrainians to move move forces south or keep some in reserve. There's no reason to expose landing ships to fire until right before you land. I guess now we know. It's good to know the Ukrainians won't have to face a third front. |
| ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa | 25 Mar 2022 8:58 a.m. PST |
I think they are being used to help alleviate the logistics problems. The Ukrainians seemed to be hammering away at that weakness in Russian planning at every opportunity. Certainly a week or two ago there was a flotilla off Odessa including landing vessels. Don't know if they are still there. At a guess I'd say the troops aboard have probably been landed and fed into the general attempts to advance that front. |

Supposedly, the one hit and damaged/destroyed was an Alligator class vessel (about twice the tonnage of the Ropucha), and Wikipedia has already updated it as lost. Reportedly, the vessel offloaded its vehicles/troops a few days ago. There are also reports some ammunition was on board which went up in the conflagration. |

There are also reports some ammunition was on board which went up in the conflagration. Something is still smoking on the dock next to the sunken ship, but the big (fuel?) tanks on the dock look intact. |
