During the American Invasion of Sicily in 1943, the 3rd Military Police Platoon, 30th Infantry Regiment landed near Licata. As the sun rose that morning and the soldiers made their way across the island, they were suddenly pinned down by a machine gun nest. One of the privates in the platoon charged the enemy position and cleared it, taking four prisoners… For his heroics during the invasion of Sicily, he earned the Silver Star and a Purple Heart…

Rank bigotry, and not applied consistently. A number of officers and NCOs I served under were spoken of as having some canine ancestry, and it certainly never kept them from receiving decorations and promotions. PETA should start a campaign to have the award reinstated.

Then we'll have 88 names on the list for renaming forts.

Military Police don't get no respect.

Who's a good boy?! Chips is a good boy!

That is totally wrong in taking the medals away.

Yes this was an unnecessary move.

Bismarck24 Mar 2022 9:44 a.m. PST

Agreed it was unnecessary. If our USMC mascot, Chesty can be
promoted, why not allow war dogs medals for heroism and valor.. IIRC, the British have such an award and gave an
one to an American war dog back in the day. Can't remember
the details, but it was a fact not just a sea story or legend.

Yeah, this is BS. The dog deserved it.

I think one of those soldiers tried to sell me one of those Italian rifles. I think his listing read: "WW2 Italian rifle, like new! Never fired, only dropped once."

Joe should reinstate the medals and give them to Chips great, great, great, great, great grandson, or granddaughter.

Thresher0124 Mar 2022 12:55 p.m. PST

It should be reinstated.

Judging decisions made in the past by todays standards is wrong. If the folks of the time decided he deserved a medal, who are we, having less info to base our decisions on, to judge?

Cause WE are better than they were. Just ask the people who did this.

Murvihill25 Mar 2022 5:28 a.m. PST

He was awarded the medal in 1943 and stripped of it in 1944. Modern sensibilities have nothing to do with it.

mildbill25 Mar 2022 9:01 a.m. PST

For loyalty and bravery there is nothing like a dog.

old tommie25 Mar 2022 1:31 p.m. PST

Guys Chips doesn't need a medal to show how courageous he was (even though it was hard earned) he was simply protecting his comrades. Some in higher places never get to feel that type of loyalty not even from another human never mind an animal.

What if this dog had been from south of the Mason-Dixon Line?

Our understanding, this side of The Pond, as we watch your CSA statues pulled down, bases renamed and images that must not be shown, is that this dog could be another, much earlier casualty of political correctness.

It is not only in the USA that guilt about slavery has led to insanity, as a reaction. UK universities have gone crazy.

Slavery was an international crime against humanity, but it was an awful long time ago now. And that poor dog deserved better of those bureaucrats. How many black folk were denied medals? But that was how it was back then……….

Are you saying Chips owned slaves? Or was it his great great great great great great great great granddaddy Old Beauregard Cow Chips? Keeping cats 🐈‍⬛ in bondage. 😉 "No One Expects the Slavery Inquisition!".

Murvihill26 Mar 2022 3:46 a.m. PST

Slavery IS an international crime against humanity and it's still going on. In the US it is illegal and prosecuted when found.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP26 Mar 2022 4:43 a.m. PST

Where in the article was anything about slavery? The only thing I saw was Deadheads remarks, which I assumed to be tongue in cheek, since it had nothing to do with the article. Hence my response.

There are many bad things in the world, slavery being only one. This was supposed to be a fun, informative and light topic. I won't get serious here.
Enjoy 😊

@ Murvihill
oops, I must have misread the article, or gotten side-tracked before responding. That seems to happen to me a lot these days.
