An East Tennessee man who deserted the US Navy in 1976 and stole another man's identity while on the lam will spend the next 25 months behind bars. And when he gets out, the Navy wants to recall him to active duty for some military justice. Coffee or Die: link |

No, the Navy will process him for discharge then release him. Standard procedure. In 1979, as a PO2 awaiting discharge, I went to the Norfolk airport picked up a Vietnam deserter since 1967. I asked why did he turn himself in he said, "I was tired of looking over my shoulder". He probably spent a week to two at processing and receive a dishonorable discharge. |

Agreed. He'll be on active duty long enough to have a hearing and be processed out. |

Yep, got to do all of the admin stuff to get them off the rolls. Then it a finger pointing to a door and a "Don't let the door hit you in the behind." |

Why desert in 1976. Vietnam was over. I joined in 1976. Had a great, enjoyable 4 years. Well, maybe not the first year so much. That was because I spent that time in cold butt Northern Michigan. |
