Shiny object to distract from actual vital (literally) issue which is the homicide rate of those they claim to defend. |

This came out at the perfect time and makes the point for me, that I was trying to express in a thread under "modern discussion" on the renaming of Military Bases. No matter how often you appease the "offended", they will never be appeased. There will always be something else. |

Yep. Things tend to get carried away of their own momentum, sometimes. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. |

Bigger things in life for me to worry about. People of that area can name their schools whatever they'd like. Having said that it's a little saddening as I'm descended from Daniel Boone's sister. :) |
skipper John | 22 Mar 2022 8:08 a.m. PST |
"Chicago elementary school." I would think that Daniel Boone is quite happy they took his name off THAT thing!!! How embarrassing it must have been for him? |
Disco Joe | 22 Mar 2022 8:34 a.m. PST |
The people doing that need to get a life. And the comment about his treatment of Indians, I am sure they treated everyone well. No wait…they didn't. |
Grattan54 | 22 Mar 2022 8:48 a.m. PST |
In my town someone wanted to remove Lincoln's name from the elementary school. Did not know Boone owned slaves. |

Not sure what I think about renaming schools based on the supposed actions of a historical figure when judged using modern day morality, but the website in the link is as funny as hell. Pure conspiracy looney heaven. |
35thOVI | 22 Mar 2022 9:57 a.m. PST |
Do a search, this story appears in multiple websites including local. This was the first to appear. Yes, some of their stories rival CNN, MSNBC and the NYT for pure loony and or false stories. 🙂 |

Or the Franklin D. Roosevelt school of constitutional law. "Now tell us again, how many Supreme Court Justices there are." |
mjkerner | 22 Mar 2022 1:45 p.m. PST |
He actually killed 3 Native Americans (don't dare say the I word) his whole life, and one of those was questionable. They took a son and a brother of his, IIRC, so things are about even. And these Chicago s wouldn't likely be here, nor would the rest of us if it weren't for people like him, Kenton, Filson, etc. But I agree with the skipper…how embarrassing for him to have his name associated with a Chicago school! |
mjkerner | 22 Mar 2022 1:46 p.m. PST |
Grattan, I think we live in the same city. I thought they were still going after Lincoln Elementary. |
DisasterWargamer | 22 Mar 2022 2:06 p.m. PST |
Perhaps we need to rename America and the US since slavery was allowed |
Bill N | 22 Mar 2022 2:19 p.m. PST |
"Now tell us again, how many Supreme Court Justices there are." Good question. Most people would be surprised to learn that the Constitution does not specify the number of justices. They would also be surprised to learn that the size of the U.S. Supreme Court has changed a few times in the history of the U.S. |

Yes on multiple occasions. In his case he could not get his way and like a spoiled rich kid, threatened to pack the court to get his way. |

I suggest we name the school after a son of Illinois, Erastus J. Wolcott. Erasmus died of diphtheria at age 11 months, presumably well before he had any chance to offend anyone. |
Thresher01 | 22 Mar 2022 4:08 p.m. PST |
Chicago IS a hot mess, so I am NOT surprised. |
Thresher01 | 22 Mar 2022 4:09 p.m. PST |
Sorry, Erasmus is not free from guilt, since many ARE being ridiculed for the sins of their forefathers and acquaintances from the same region of the planet they are from. |

Why they name elementary school in Chicago after D. Boone in the first place?? |
35thOVI | 22 Mar 2022 6:50 p.m. PST |
Why did they name my grade school after John Kennedy? We didn't live in Massachusetts. 🤔 History. |

MjKerner, Same state my friend but the school I was talking about was in Wauwatosa. One of the people spearing the movement is a neighbor of mine. LOL. |

Bill N | 23 Mar 2022 5:04 a.m. PST |
In his case he could not get his way and like a spoiled rich kid, threatened to pack the court to get his way. How is that any different than the Republican Congress deciding to shrink the number of justices when Andrew Johnson was president only to return it to its original size once Grant was elected? Name changes happen. Didn't Columbia start out as King's College? Rutgers as Queen's College? Washington and Lee University started out named Augusta Academy, then Liberty Hall Academy and then was named for George Washington before adopting the name Washington and Lee. The current round of name changes can be silly. It can be hypocritical. It also has precedent. |
35thOVI | 23 Mar 2022 5:13 a.m. PST |
Does the fact that the Congress did the wrong thing, negate the fact that the Democratic President also wanted to do the wrong thing? Changes happen, but we are in a tsunami PC related name changes. It is past the point of ridiculous. Add statues and every other thing they are demanding. Who absorbs the cost of these changes? The "offended"? Of course not. It's the taxpayers! Most of which don't want the changes nor know about them. |

I'm still waiting for the "discussion of anything related to the American Revolution/War of American Independence." |
35thOVI | 23 Mar 2022 6:17 a.m. PST |
Boone was involved in the Revolution and I felt his contributions and his character were being ridiculed and belittled. It was here, or the Indian Wars thread. He is our heritage and deserves respect for his contributions. We can't keep destroying our history to appease a few very vocal PC minority. |

I live just N of Hillsboro, NC, the town from which Boone took the party which settled Boonesborough. There's a large and old monument (stone) in the shape of an arrowhead which commemorates the event. For a while I was a volunteer at the local museum which has a wealth of Boone-related artifacts, documents, correspondence, etc. Boone was adopted into a couple of Native American tribes. As did other warrior members, he fought in their conflicts against other NA tribes, generally not killing but 'counting coup' against enemies. In most cases, these 'battles' were posturing/shouting/ grimacing with a bit of HTH tussle 'til one side broke off. Don't know about Boone/slaveowning. The section of the museum with those records was accessible onto by accredited 'scholars,' whomever they might be. |
Bill N | 23 Mar 2022 9:53 a.m. PST |
I went to a Daniel Boone village near Hillsboro as a kid. I was curious what the connection was between Boone and that part of North Carolina. |
35thOVI | 23 Mar 2022 12:12 p.m. PST |
Here, let's get the real reasons for the name change. I mean it's not like it's an agenda driven city wide initiative. Some might say nationwide. According to them, Old Daniel is a "historically egregious figure". (Sung to the theme of the Daniel Boone Show) "Daniel Boone was a man. Yes a BIG historically egregious man. With the eye of an eagle and as tall as a mountain was he." I believe this is a very small group wanting this and a very easily influenced student group. Notice at the public hearing only what groups were allowed to attend. Wonder why? 🤔 Subject: Daniel Boone Elementary School to ax 'historically egregious' namesake link |
Mister Tibbles | 23 Mar 2022 1:33 p.m. PST |
We live in a democracy of the minority, sadly, but are not allowed to say anything contrary to tne minority out of fear of reprisal from them. Been that way much of my life. Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett were big heroes of my youth. That they were identical twins made it easier for me as a kid to remember them. ;-) I think Crockett has a better theme song than Boone. I have a Crockett 28mm figure but I don't know if a Boone figure is made? |

Probably Marx made one back in the 60's. I would be willing to bet on it. |

Bill N – DB Village was built as an amusement park in the 1950's by the Freeman family. Overtime, other attractions in NC got the crowds and DBV became a haven for antique shops. The family which owned the property finally sold it to a developer and all the historic buildings are gone. There is a high density residential development E of DBV proper and all the shops have been bulldozed, including 'Daniel Doone Traders,' the antique shop owned by my wife and run by me. |

Hah! I live in Madison, Wisconsin and they renamed Madison memorial over his slave ownership in the name of ‘Black Liberation.' The city is named Madison. We can't name a school after the guy the city was named for. Crazy. link Note that the vote succeeded and now it is Vel Phillips high school, named for a Black woman who became a judge and aldeperson (in Milwaukee, not Madison). No word when they will rename Madison, though nearby Columbus is getting the big stink eye to change their name. |
