Have the book. It's a decent overview. I was hoping for more detail but it was lacking in that area. |

Link given is to Page 20- thats a helluva 'overview'! Lacking? Not sure what! [No I haven't read it yet…]. First Page: link No idea who the writer actually is. Always a bit uneasy when I see, "-the-true-story" in any headline. It's a bit like 'Wait- theres more…'. On further look, this doesnt appear a review- but the actual book contents-- For very many years I have wanted to tell this story. At one level that is the simple purpose of this book. But I am an old-fashioned historian who likes his stories to be true, or at least as close to the truth as an honest, knowledgeable and meticulous study of the available evidence allows. Many years ago I came to the conclusion that the story as told in Western Europe and North America was very far from the truth.…As a graduate student in the Soviet Union in the 1970s I once got into a fierce argument with a young woman who was furious at the fact that among the portraits is that of Alexander Benckendorff, who subsequently served as Nicholas I's chief of the security police. etc. etc.
A key aim of this book is to get back beyond the Russian myths to the realities of the Russian war effort in 1812–14. I am above all interested in establishing how and why Russia overcame the enormous challenge presented by Napoleon in these years. There are also other reasons for questioning aspects of Russian mythology about the Napoleonic era. Again not a period of my interest, but from a different aspect of 'history' perhaps. cheers dave

Lieven's book is quite good, especially from the Russian point of view – he draws on a lot of Russian language sources, in case you are interested in the wars from 1812 – 1814, in my view a must read. |
