Anybody have recommendations?

I have looked at Deus Vult, but given the setup rules, does it work for a soloist?
Also heard some rumblings about Clash of Empires. How is that for a soloist?

Any other suggestions?

You could give "To the Strongest!" a try. The way it is set-up with cards controlling the movement and combat you could very easily do it solo.

Available from BigRedBat;s Shop at link

He has army lists to allow you to build competing forces.

And there is a discussion forum at link where one can ask questions and get answers from the experts.

To the Strongest was my first thought too. It's a grid based game which limits fancy manoeuvring, while the use of cards/chits for movement means that even the most cunning plans can fail.

If you want to focus in on the First Crusade you could try a crusade specific rule set like 'Soldiers of God' – it has set up rules that should work OK for solo play. And if you want a game which restricts who can do what and when you could always try one of the Piquet variants.

Warrior Kings if you can find a copy is defined for solo play. I've never played it for crusades but I would imagine that you could work up army lists for it easily enough.

Designed not defined, sorry

For something very 1st Crusades focused, see if you can find a copy of Shattered Lance. They take a bit of study but I like them a lot. The Perfect Captain Strongbow rules are also worth a look.
