On Saturday March 19th a buddy and I will be running a North-West Frontier game using The Sword And The Flame colonial rules at the first-ever DESERT WARS con at the Convention Center in Mesa, Arizona, being held on Saturday March 19 and Sunday March 20th. Here's the scenario from the Schedule of Events: 1st Brigade Peshawar Field Force has orders to defeat the army of Gul Akbar Khan, which sits camped in the valley on the far side of the Elephant Paw Pass. Will the Anglo-Indian mixed-brigade of Infantry, Cavalry & Artillery push through the bottleneck and defeat the enemy on their own terms… or will the Rebel Tribesmen use their home-court knowledge of the rough terrain and the presence of Ghazi fanatics in their ranks to defeat the Farangi, despite their advantage in modern weaponry? Co-command the forces of The Raj or the Rebel Tribesmen in this miniature extravaganza fought with high-quality 28mm armies over 10'x6' of custom terrain, utilizing the classic colonial rules-set: The Sword And The Flame.
Follow this link to register for this and/or other games at the convention, or to submit a game of your own as GM: tabletop.events/conventions This "Bloody Elephant's Paw" scenario was created as part of an ongoing North-West Frontier campaign. Here's a LINK to a Battle Report I recently posted here on TMP: TMP link …and a LINK to a longer AAR with more pics on my Maiwand Day blog: link
The first time it was a close-fought match, and as we all know, every time you play a game, it turns out at least a little differently, so who knows what the results will be when it's transported from my home in Los Angeles, California, 400 miles East to the convention site in Mesa, Arizona???
We have room for up to 3 British and 3 Pathan commanders, so if you will be within reach of Mesa, AZ on Saturday March 19th I invite you to register and put your military genius to work for or against the Raj by pushing some lead,… rolling some dice,… watching the GMs flip some cards… and enjoying the tragedy or triumph that results!

Thanks very much, guys! Jim, wish you could be there too! Greylegion, here's a LINK to an old page on my blog which shows how I built the rocky hills using garden wood-chips, insulation foam, hardboard, etc: link If you like what you see and want more, search the blog as there are other pages with detailed tutorials for the terrain-boards, mountain passes, rocky areas, roads, the fortified tower, etc. |

AAR of our "NEVER TRUST ANYONE ON THE FRONTIER" game to follow in the near future.
Here's just a few pics to tide you over:
It was a great weekend. Very happy I went. The game went very well, mostly thanks to the players, who were mostly awesome. I think there were about 75 attendees on Saturday, and about 45 on Sunday. Drawn from Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California (like myself), Texas (like my co-GM Shawn), and a few non-South-Western states. I hope HMGS-PSW do it again next near, and if they do I will try to attend and to bring another TSATF game. Well, at least if gray-beard Shawn agrees to drive in from Texas and help me run it again. Or maybe next year I can help him run a TMWWBK game…???
Hmmm. On second thought, probably not! Something tells me General Patton would not approve…
Everyone knows Patton preferred TSATF to TMWWBK! |

It was a pleasure to meet you as well and it was a great looking game. Every time I looked over it looked like the players were having a good time. There will be another Desert Wars AZ next year. We are starting the planning for it now. There will be an initial planning meeting on 2 April and then launch the Desert Wars AZ facebook page. |

Sylvain, my friend! Thanks very much for posting your comment here, seeing it made my day, and when I told Shawn about it I think it made his day too! Running the game with you and your friends as players was tremendous fun for us too. Like you, I really hope we get to do it again, maybe next year at "Desert Wars 2023," in which case hopefully you can come back to participate. |
