Forgive me if this has already been posted/discussed somewhere in the past, as I couldn't find it.

I'm looking at buying a new case for my minis, (my 25/28/30 mm) figs and am wondering which brands one would recommend. I need one that is sturdy enough to travel long distance, (so cardboard is out), but easy enough to carry, and will protect the figures from "rattling around"…but at the same time will NOT require me to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford it.

Any suggestions, ideas, recommendations?

Murphy

I like hard shell cases and with 50+ GW Bretonnian cavalry to deal with, I was not pleased at the options available so I started making my own. I use handgun cases; the 4-pistol size cases are $20 USD or so at large sporting goods stores (and often less on sale). They come with foam trays (sometimes eggshell, sometimes not) which can be adapted for vehicles.

For 25/28 miniatures (especially cavalry) though, I make my own cutout foam trays with foam from a fabric store; this cuts with scissors or hobby knife and can be stuck together with fabric glue or hot glue. It can be built up in layers if needed. I like that I can make custom foam enclosures for large monster models for instance.

If you want to go with a commercial system, frankly, the Games Workshop hardshell case is a really nice case, double-walled unlike the typical gun case or equipment case. It's not the cheapest though, nor the largest, although I believe in the UK they have announced a double-sized case.

Many people around me have either the Army Transport from Sabol Designs or the Battlepack from Charon Productions. Both are a system of a carrying case plus modular trays of varying thicknesses. The Sabol trays are pull-apart perforated foam; the Charon are pre-cut out. Most of their cases are soft shell although Charon has one with hard walls inserted and I believe Sabol has something similar. At least one case from each company meets the airline industry regulations for carryon size.

The owners of these always swear by them.

Chessex all the way. The problem with the GW 40K hardcase is that the figure slots are too big and they can still move slightly, depending on the figure, leading to broken weapons/arms/details. Cases like the Sabol stuff are soft shell, meaning you can have figure damage if something heavy is placed on top of it, or if it's dropped. Because of these reasons (and experiences) I've turned to Chessex:

Decent variety and very durable. A guy I know had a bungie cord break while zipping down the freeway on his motorcycle, and some Chessex cases hit pavement at 60+ miles an hour. Not only did the cases not pop open on impact, but one of them survived a car hit. His figures survived with only minor rattle damage, easily fixed.

Chessex boxes also stack well and are easy to store and transport. That's my rec, anyway.

It depends where you live, if your are in the UK then we have a large range of cases and foam trays to suit ALL scales, but if you are in the States or Canada then Charon are a good port of call.

Also I forgot to mention our cases have been tested using Easyjet baggage handlers, and came out with no broken parts.

Check out Tap Plastics. They have a medium size black case, lined with foam, that holds 25-35 of my 28mm Old West figures. The case costs $12-$15. It's one of the best buys around.

I'm partial to Doskocil brand pistol cases (4 gun pistol cases are the best). They're relatively cheap if you can find them, they're durable and they can hold a lot of miniatures. They may require some carving of the foam though.

FOZZBOZ – they carry cardboard miniature storage cases with foam padding for dirt cheap which can be stacked, put in larger containers, hard sided suitcases, wheeled rolling carts, etc. If you need more protection than that – you must be flying on a plane or really rough handle your figures!

I happen to have a brand new skirmish pack for sale by Charron Productions. While you are on their site have a look. I am in PA USA.
