After a short break I resume my quest for the perfect Small Table Fantasy Battles rules. This time with basic movement rules, trying to keep in line with making things simple yet tactically challenging.

Small Table Fantasy Battles: Movement

Interesting, and I do a lot of that the same way, especially changing formations. I tend to allow a unit to change facing up to 180 degrees BEFORE movement, but then require a straight line. Probably unrealistic but quick and easy.

A square grid (which can be an imaginary box around a single dot representing the center of the square) allows facing in eight directions (counting the corners) and then one can deduct movement points for 45 degree pivots within the square at any point in a move. This probably requires some paintwork on the ground cloth.

Oh, I toyed for a while with the idea of a hexagonal map which would have made unit space occupied basically equal for all but that would have gone too Panzer General for me. Although i dream of big hexes where i could use single Flames of War stands as units like Panzer General. :)

I love and still play Fantasy General.

To be honest you could start with the type used by DBA/HOT/DBM its very credible and intuative and simple. It must be DBA in particular is still very popular so has to be a good start.
