"Generally speaking, MRE's (Meals, ready-to-eat), mostly used as military food rations, sound pretty great. After all, it's a meal that's supposed to stuff you up pretty good, comes in a compact package, and, most importantly, is pretty cheap – so what's not to like? Well, even though it might sound pretty good in theory, the reality is a little bit different. And to show you just what kind of food soldiers have to eat every day, Filipino YouTuber David Hong has set out on a quest to try out different military MRE's from all over the world…."

I would starve in many armies!!! Ate pretty good in the US Army – deployed and not.

I would love to try other nations' rations. When I used to take extended backpacking trips, I would break down a case of MREs and choose various items to use for lunch or dinner along with commercial dehydrated items. You just have to realize that it is all edible and meant to keep you going – they are not gourmet items (unless they are French perhaps…)! My expectations were not high but sometimes I was pleasantly surprised.

I continue to purchase and try various civilian MRE-like foodstuffs at Sportsman's Warehouse and find that shelf-stable items are still improving but ultimately, you really shouldn't expect them to taste like a home-cooked meal or your local restaurant because, well, – THEY AREN'T! ;-)
