Well got myself interested now, found a boot at Gutenberg on the demise of the royal family. Nothing I didn't read snippets of before but it's very sad reading.

"Боже, Царя храни!"
"Съ нами Богъ!"
Now I want miniatures of the Imperial family in military uniforms.

Wife saw this picture on my tablet gallery and took some time to convince her it was 1 real, 2nd a hundred years old. And conversation turned to why they were dressed in uniform. So options I think are
Totally dress up
A military ball

Anyone stopping by think of anything else?

Also have read a few books now on the Russian Revolution and onto another now

That is Grand Duchess Tatiana as honorary Colonel of the 8th Vosnesenski Lancers, 1912

The other unit is Grand Duchess Olga as honorary Colonel of the 12th Akhtyrsky Hussar Regiment.

I see that de Ligne got there before me.

As "Colonels", they would inspect the troops.

The British Trooping of the Colour is similar. Before she got too old for it, the last Queen used to attend in uniform similar to the Grand Duchesses. I expect King Charles will attend in uniform.
