Your story is well written. But if you had miniatures and some nice terrain you could illustrate your story. A few pictures can go a long ways. |

Nothing to show. We play theatre of the mind. No terrain or maps or minis. Though I have created the four characters at Heroforge. Have not printed them yet. |

Well done. I recently bought one of the starter sets because my kids have expressed an interest in the game. I am kinda looking forward to it. I don't think I've played D&D since the late 70s. |

"Nothing to show. We play theater of the mind. No terrain or maps or minis." Best way to play! Roleplaying instead of Roll Playing. ;-) |

Love theater of the mind, but my primary rpg group is incapable of it. If they can't calculate the exact positions of each enemy to perfectly place a fireball or burning hands their minds melt and the whining begins. Great group otherwise, but they want absolute situational awareness. Funnily enough, they don't like miniatures games. Weird lot. |

I think my 13th level Paladin went to the dark side. |

79thPA- the starer sets are a great way to get into D&D. The adventures are fun, classic, and well designed for beginning players. I hope you all have a ball! MrT- I agree! TG- so sad. Have fun! Imagine! No power gaming at our table. relaxed and fun, and maybe a bit heroic for some, but we are enjoying ourselves. JM- Well, he needs to get to Level 14 and off that unlucky number! |

I got back into D&D several years ago, but now I am firmly splitting my interest after trying to be both tactical as well as imaginative. My roleplaying group is drifting old school, with attribute checks and off-the-cuff rulings by me as DM and very minimal use of maps and no miniatures. On the other hand, I have taken all of my fantasy miniatures and dwarven forge terrain (I have a LOT), and am using D&D 4th edition as the ruleset for tabletop skirmish with no real roleplaying element. Even the grognard-friendly 5th edition of D&D is too detailed and fiddly for my roleplaying tastes, and 4e is wayyyy too tight a system for fun roleplaying but it is perfect for a skirmish game with the detail and depth of an rpg (characters and monsters). |

Borderguy190: We play theatre of the mind. No terrain or maps or minis. And you're posting on The Miniatures Page web site? You showed us! Anyway glad you are enjoying your journey with D&D. |

For those interested, the older versions of D&D are all available both as PDFs and POD books from DriveThruRPG.com. Yes, these are legal— they are sold by Wizards of the Coast through DriveThru. You can get everything from the original "White Books" from 1974 to 4e, with one exception— The 1978 Holmes edition— the original Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set written and edited by John Eric Holmes— is not available at this time. But everything else is, including all the modules, accessories, campaign worlds, maps, you name it. So you don't have to play 5e if you don't want. My fave is the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia, which compiles and edits the four "Basic" D&D "BECMI" boxed sets from 1983-1985. Best omnibus edition of the game, IMHO. But a lot of people prefer the earlier "Moldvay & Cook" Basic and Expert (aka B/X) rules from 1980-81. And of course there are "clone" editions you can get: Sword & Sorcery updates the original White Book/Brown Box 1974 edition (including elements of the expansion books). Labyrinth Lord imitates B/X. Darker Dungeons mimics the RC. And there are a lot more. It's a golden age for D&D these days. |

Thanks Parzival. There are more than just old rules books available as POD on DriveThruRPG. Source books and modules are also there. Want to play some other edition? Easily done. It really is a golden age. |

Great write up it is hard to find groups to do D&D with. |
