HMGS-PSW will be hosting Desert Wars 2022. 19 & 20 March 2022 at the Mesa Convention Center, Mesa Arizona. This is the first year for the convention and looking for volunteers to help run the convention as well as encourage those interested to run games and attend.

Wish someone had posted about this new convention a little sooner. Six weeks advance notice is not much. Right now I'm looking into potentially driving out from Los Angeles to meet up with a buddy from El Paso, TX and run a big game together. It's about midway between us, approx. 6 hrs. drive heading East for me and West for him… but it may just be too late notice to work out. But whether I make it as a GM or not, I hope the new convention is a big success!

McClintock: Any chance there will there be access to the venue on Friday afternoon or evening for set-up? Also the page for the con on the "Table Top Events" site doesn't have any info on COVID protocols, and I could find any on the Convention Center site either. Does that mean there are none? If so, that's fine by me, but I'd rather know for sure what if any rules will be in place before making such a big commitment of time and effort. If you have any answers to these questions I'd very much appreciate it if you could post them here. Either way, thanks in advance for your time and effort on behalf of the hobby!

What game are you planning on running. We are already talking and making plans for next years convention. I got involved in this years convention late. So doing what I can to hlep get the word out. I plan on running two games myself. As far as covid goes there are no restrictions at this time. I will be checking out the site thursday. If there is any change I will post it.

Thanks very much for the fast reply, McClintock! I'm friends with Harmon Ward here in SoCal and also asked him to find out about potential Friday night access. I'm waiting to hear back, hoping it will be possible.

RE: what game I'll bring if I do attend… I can't say for sure yet, because the one at the top of my list has 12'x6' of terrain boards including a river, plus a rocky mountain range, several villages, a canal system and lots of other terrain. Because the tabletop is so elaborate I'd be much more comfortable running it if I'm able to set up the terrain the night before. Of course I know that just may not be feasible. If not, I should probably down-size to a more modest set-up… though I might ignore common sense and try to give the mammoth game a try anyway, setting up the morning of and playing in the afternoon/evening, if that can fit into the convention schedule. Either way -- bigger or smaller in size -- it would be a 28mm Second Afghan War colonial game and the rules will be The Sword And The Flame or its big battle variant, Eight Hundred Fighting Englishmen.

If it works out and I do bring a game, a friend of mine who lives in West Texas will join me to help set up and GM. Mesa is about halfway between us, so a convenient place for us to meet up, which is another motive for me to attend.

Thanks again for responding to my comment, and whether I make it there or not, I wish you much success with your new convention!

Sounds like a great convention game. Having a nice mix of historical periods goes a long way towards making a good convention. I know I would encourage you to attend. I think there is a good future for this convention and the more that get involved the easier it will become to get the word out.

Planning to drive to Mesa and already registered my game. Due to scheduling issues (combination of no venue access Friday night and pretty early end to evening gaming) I'm bringing the more modest set-up -- 10'x6' and no river or canal, but lots of rocky mountains with two passes, several villages, and a trio of ancient Ghandaran ruins. Anglo-Indian brigade must advance through the Elephant Paw Pass to engage a Tribal host that previously attacked the British cantonment at Dargai and following that action is regrouping in the valley.

Thanks for all your help with info, McClintock! Hopefully we can meet in person at the con.

I look forward to meeting you there and seeing your game. I will be running a Black Seas game on Saturday of the convention and Walking Dead game on Sunday. Yours sounds like a great game and thank you for coming and running it at the convention.
