Low-level SCW organization. Let me see if I have this straight: A battalion would have at least two companies divided into two or three "seccions"(platoons). These seccions were split into two "pelotons" (sections) that were in turn split into a pair of "grupos" (squads). Each grupo would contain a corporal (cabo) leading five or six privates and each peloton was commanded by a sergeant. The seccion HQ would have an officer as CO assisted by a senior sargento and would have an additional seven men. Ideally, there would be 2 light machine guns and 2 light mortars per seccion but this would depend on availability. Medium mortars and infantry guns, if available, were held at the battalion level at best. The nationalists were often more likely to have support weapons due to supplies provided by Germany and Italy, but Russia did supply many LMGs/MMGs to the Republic. The above organization applied to both sides with the exception of Republican militia that were much more AD HOC and were lucky to have firearms at all. |
