Hi everyone, I know I'm about 15 years late to the party, but I'd like to start gaming some space ship battles using the star trek universe. Probably gonna use Full thrust Cross Dimensions rules. Now it seems that AMB is the place to go for classic trek TOS; but I'm more of a TNG kind of guy. HERESY I know, but I grew up watching TNG. Sourcing TNG ships, the only place I can really find so far is NashStarShipYards on shapeways that sell TNG looking ships. But it really bugs me that there is no scale mentioned on the site…So 2 questions please: 1) Does anyone know what (if any) scale the NASH stuff is and does it at least scale to itself? 2) Anyone know of other sources for TNG style ships? The Nash stuff looks nice but is a liiiitle pricey. Thanks in advance. Appreciate the help. -Stew |

You can use the Star Trek Hero Clix ships from Wizkids. All over EBay for reasonable prices. The ships are not to scale though. Incidently, these are the same ships that Wizkids used for Star Trek Attack Wing. Hope this helps. Tom |

There are loads of files if you want to print your own. Studio Bergstrom carries some ships. Furuta also made ships but that was at least a decade ago. I game in TNG-DS9 era. I use Furuta size ships. 3-6" for most ships and up to 9 inches for a larger one. Not really aware of anything else out there. Thanks John |

I don't know of any one consistent scale line of TNG ships. A lot of that is because there is a lot of size difference between some of the ships, and the size they would be on the table. A 1/3900 (FASA scale) Galaxy for example is 6.25" long (while a Warbird is 13.65"), and in 1/3125 a Galaxy is 7.8" long. If you go the other direction, say 1/7000, then a Galaxy is about 3.5" but a Miranda (reliant) is only about 1.25 inches. I actually do TNG in 1/2500! (Galaxy = 9.75") and scratchbuild most of my ships, but then I have a patio to game on. VSB |

Yeah, Star Trek is a scale bugbear, especially in the TNG era. The Enterprise D dwarfs the original Enterprise, while other ships vary widely, as VSB notes. I suspect that no matter how you go, you're going to have to accept some out-of-scale ships to have a playable experience. I don't know what they're going for, but it's possible you could find the ships from the Star Trek: Risk game. The ships are limited to the original Enterprise, the Enterprise D (TNG), the Defiant, Voyager and the Enterprise from ST:E. There are no Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, Orions, Ferengi, Gorn, or any other vessels from any era, which is the sort of thing that makes you go "What the heck were they thinking?" In any case, they're not to scale, but the game has a LOT of them, plus out of scale Galileo class shuttles (TOS).

Micro Machines and Hallmark (Xmass ornaments) did TNG/VOY/DS9 ships, but in no consistent scale. Occasionally a ship from one source will be approximately in scale with a ship from another source, e.g. a Gamescience/TFG/FASA 1701 with a Hallmark 1701-D. |

What approximate scale are you looking for? On Shapeways National Cheese Emporium has MicroFleets if you want to carry a fleet or two in a pencil case. |

I love the Micro fleets!! I upscaled them 150%. But with a Printer you can scale them as big as you need them. |

Thanks everyone. I don't really have a specific scale in mind. I guess I'd like the Enterprise to be around 3" max as a starting point. I do have some of the wizkids ships from my starfleet captains board game. As I poke more around the shapeways site I found some more Star Trek ish ships in all sorts of sizes. Guess I could be just very selective and mix and match. Thanks again! 😀 |

I based my Fed fleet upon the Naruta Galaxy Class (1/6200 scale I think), and went from there. I still ended up with a mix of manufacturers and even some Shapeways ships. I think I got it pretty close… See pics:

Nice fleet. The scale may not be perfect, but that's not achievable. Love that you do have the Defiant nearly to scale. The Runabouts are oversized, but I get that you have them configured as fighters (along with… I think those are "Interceptors?" I only have a vague memory of them). Scale Runabouts would be grains of rice! You've done great putting that together— and 14 ship classes without a duplicate? That's pretty cool. |

nice job Bilco. That's what i am looking to achieve. As I dig around shapeways for ships, I'm thinking the scale I'm looking for is close to 1/5000. trying to find that sweet spot in the ranges that Virtualscrathbuilder describes above. 1/7000 seems to make big ships a nice size but the smaller ships really small, and and the 1/3988 or 1/2500 seems to make the big ships too big (for my purposes, gonna be using a 5x6 table).
thanks again everyone for continuing to chip in the discussion. -Stew |

It turns out I misremembered who made the Galaxy class – it was Furuta. Parzival, The fighters are Federation Attack fighters (seen in Deep Space Nine) from the Star Trek Attack Wing. I had been using the Full Thrust rules, but I found that my version of the Klingons was really broken, and I haven't gotten around to re-doing their weapons. My original intent had been to run games from the transitional era (movie era to right before the TNG era) to post-TNG. One of the biggest problems was that Full Thrust doesn't model tech level differences very well, so my attempts to force the rules to do so was relatively complicated and the feedback I received convinced me to give up on it. |
