Painting up some NKVD troops. I cannot confirm from any sites if other ranks wore blue trousers or just officers. Khaki and blue is very interesting uniform. But want to be somewhat . Thanks much for the info. |

Laszlo Bekesi's "KGB & Soviet Security Uniforms & Militaria 1917 – 1991 in colour photographs" (Crowood Press, 2002) implies that other ranks wore blue or khaki breeches, but the illustrations are all show khaki breeches except for a senior sergeant on page 29, summer 1944, with white gymnastiorka and blue breeches. I suspect that khaki was more likely in the front line, but they are your toy soldiers and if you want them in blue you can refer doubters to the source above. |

I did my NKVD breeches in blue. Best way to make them stand out on the table. |

Bit of a mixed bag. All ranks were issued blue breeches for their parade and walking out uniforms. Pre-war most likely to be blue breeches. I suspect they would be predominate at outbreak of war as well. As the NKVD troops participated more and more as regular combat troops, and not just details like blocking detachments, khaki would be the most evident. This would include NCOs and officers. If you want a bit of color suggest the way I did my NKVD unit. Put your officers and perhaps the NCOs in the blue breeches. Enlisted in khaki. Mine all still have the distinctive blue hat with red piping. Depending on scale also be differences with piping and insignias. |

Thanks to all for the comments. I like to at least think I did research on uniforms before I paint them. I spent quite a while searching websites "NKVD uniforms" etc. I only saw officers in blue but like others have said they look good in blue and khaki for the whole bunch. I will do them in blue and khaki officers and other ranks . |

Blue breeches or trousers are a detail of the everyday uniform of all Soviet officers of any kind of service. The NKVD servicemen, in their everyday uniform, had a colored cap: a maroon crown and a blue top. Border guards – blue crown and green top. With field uniforms, they did not have any differences from the rest of the army. |

I just did mine with blue caps. I used WW1 figures in flat caps. Close enough. |
