Hi mates. Is there any good book, website or some other source about battle for the Arctic? I am interested in scenarios, maps, anything about theme. From both point of view NATO and WP. |

First off, Ian Slater's books shouldn't be used as a resource for anything. Fun to read, but most of it strains credulity. GDW's Arctic Front is good as a board game, but it was meant to tie into the Third World War system, so it was at a bit of a higher scale. The best source, at least for wargamers was the Strategy & Tactics issue with the game called Nordkapp. Besides being one of the better S&T games the magazine had several articles about the force structures, terrain, and difficulties fighting in that environment. link |

I think the Slater book falls under the "theme" part of his request. |

Check out the news and Putin's moves there. The Cold War has restarted, and he's making major moves there to gain access to offshore oil fields. |

Would NATO naval forces (ships, submarines and aircraft) be positioned only in GIUK gap or would some forces be used for hunting soviets SSBNs in northern bastion, would NATO use Svalbard basses or would just positioned CV group up there, how much can F/A-18 work from unprepared Svalbard base…? I sow pictures of soviet MiG-25 covered with snow and they would fly after removing snow. Maybe that is only propaganda but from what I know of soviet weapons is that they are easy maintenance. Also i read that in Alaska USAF aircraft must have good conditioned hangars or they cant be used. Also in how cold and icy weather can CVs operate, I guess that icy and cold conditions can lover CVs aircraft operations a lot. |

I believe the operational altitude of most aircraft was much colder than the arctic at the ground level. However, ice would be an issue… As far as naval forces, NATO would operate in the Norwegian Sea in support of Norway. |
