I haven't been using the blog much recently and haven't put anything on there about the new Big Project here at Yarkshire Gamer, I am building up both sides for the Battle of Mentana in 1867 which was a fight between a Papal / French force and Garibaldi.

Lots of info and pics on the link above. The figures are 28mm Plastic Perrys Zouave bodies with metal heads from Steve Barber Models. I will get round to putting up a post with the Garibaldi troops as soon as I can.

Ken,

Those are well-done figures!

For those who either don't like to put together plastic figures or live in the US, Old Glory has a pack of 30 ACW Zouaves in kepi which would work well for Papal Zouaves in the Risorimento and, if one doesn't look too close at the weapon, for the Papal Zouaves in the French Republican forces during the Franco-German War, 1980-1871.

Very nice! I just sent off a bunch of Mirliton Papal Zouaves and Garibaldini to Philgreg to be painted. Once I get them back I plan to do the Battle of Mentana using TMWWBK.

I've been reseaching the battle for years. It was the first time the French Chassepot rifle was used in battle.

Witnesses said it was like the sound of rolling thunder.

Nice one Robert, it's my big Project for the year and I hope to get the finished Project to a few shows later in the year.

"the Papal Zouaves in the French Republican forces during the Franco-German War"

Wait, what? Papal troops joined the fighting after the defeat of Napoleon III and the fall of the empire?

The papal Zouaves had been disbanded in October 1870 and apparently their French element volunteered to fight on the Republican side. I am not sure what uniforms they wore?

Ken, I hope you will share pictures of the battle eventually.

Feel free to contact me at burker1 (at) aol (dot) com if you would like to exchange research on Mentana.

They fought as "Volontaires de l'Ouest" during the republican phase of the FPW – here a photo of some members of the 1st battalion: link … and the main page with the history of the papal zouaves and their successors: link

Their moments of glory were in the battles of Loigny/Poupry and Le Mans.

Beautiful Le Mans game here:
