As I start doing Napoleonic project I am doing it in 6mm. The base I am going to use has a 3/8" width. I would like to put a National Flag on each base along with the other information. Any suggestions? |

With my 15mm-28mm stands I put the unit ID on the underside of the base. |

I did the 'sticking out the back of the base' paper labels. National flag and other info was printed on paper then cut to size and glued onto the underside (sticky side up) of Post It notes, along the edge of the sticky bit, then cut to the width and depth of the label which itsellf is the width of the base.. Being Post It note adhesive the labels can be removed-reapplied multiple times and. when not stuck on the bases. can be stuck to a sheet of plastic such as a clear file pocket whick can itself be stored in a binder. Thet way, depending on which label is attached at the time, generic infantry bases can represent any unit; and units with one facing colour can represent any other of the same type and facing colour (if the flag/s are similar enough, of course). |

In 5/6mm, I use a 3mm thick base and paint the back edge a national color. In 2mm, the underside of the base is the national color. A lot depends on how one's tolerance for writing on the battlefield. Mine is fairly low. |

If you mean that it is 3/8" (9mm) from front to back then I doubt you'd have enough room for any readable info at all once the figures are in place. |

I concur with Robert that visible writing on the tabletop is visually unappealing, particularly with small-scale figures where the letters are nearly as tall as the figures. Painting the back edge in a subtle color won't jar the look nearly as much. Perhaps dark blue for the French, blue-grey for French allies, dark green for Russians, yellow-ochre for Austrians, black for Prussians, brick-red for British, and perhaps brown for British allies (evocative of Portuguese cacadores and some Spanish uniforms). |

Having all my bases magnetised I can use a sabot base to hold a label and/or dice to record losses/condition if I want to. I find a 10mm Ferrosheet strip at the rear of a 30mm square base is a good way of attaching a magnetic label and I can put whatever I want on the label. Personally I like labelled bases but hate having to pick up a base to ID it. A lot depends on how much data you need for each base; in some games they'd be superfluous but in others, they are useful. |

In many ways, I agree with Gildas. It's a matter of personal preference, and quite a number of rules won't work well without an information card attached to each unit. That said, there are a lot of rules to choose from these days, and I try to pick rules--and paint and base castings--in ways to minimize table clutter, including paperwork. Either way, it's taste, and neither logic nor morality. Oh. And those bases painted on the bottom are for post-game clean-up. I don't like picking up troops from the table any more than Gildas. But 2mm also requires special effort to make nationality and troop type visible without markers. Life, as they say, is full of choices. |

Hello Charles! 3/8" width sounds awful fiddly for 6mm. What is the length and base thickness? How many of these bases make up a battalion or cavalry regiment or artillery battery. What rules are you using? Some rules don't require any flags or information on the basing. If you could answer these questions I should be able to give you an answer. I've been gaming in 6mm for over 45 years. Best regards, Glenn |

Okay the 3/8 is the height of the lip it comes up from the base at the back. runs along the back the entire way. See if I can post a picture of what they look like link I want to put as much info as I can on the base. |

Like Eumulus and Robert I am not a fan:I dislike a nice wargame table with lovely terrain and beautifully painted troops filled with markers, dice, papers, cups of tea/beerbottles,etc…Flags on the battlefield perfectly identify nationality of troops, and identificaton can be put on the back side of the base.Keep it simple and looking natural. |

For 60 x 30 mm bases i print a small national flag and glue it to the rear left corner of the base before adding texture. |

Glenn I'm new to TMP and I've basically read all of the 6mm posts that relate to napoleonic wargaming and I've seen a number of posts from yourself telling others their basing is somehow fiddly…. Can you not just support someone's base size choice without sounding condescending. |

If you are a pure gamer than labels may be acceptable, but i prefer my bases to be clean. I label the bottom of all my bases, nationality, a picture of the figure and its type, Musketeer, light, etc. I don't do this for game purposes, only for storage purposes. I did try and label my 6mm WW2 figures on the rear edge, that may give you what you need. But you need a thick base, in my case i use 3mm thick MDF. However i never found the labels as useful and am removing them. |

PM Me. I make flags on adhesive sheets, for all eras and scales. A 5mm sheet for the Napoleonic wars would get you over 800 flags of almost every nation. Cheers! Daniel |

My advice is to indicate the nationality and type of the figure on the bottom of the base. If you want anything visible on the playing area place that on a movement tray and place your bases inside it. However this does depend on what rules you are using, some rules do require you to indicate the formation and you need to keep track of its strength, but even here I would place it on a movement tray and keep your elements clear. |

I've used a couple of different methods. For thin small bases I use a color code. It is a try-color system, the first color denotes the nation the next two the unit. The colors are on the back edce of the base. |
